Me and My FiOS Quantum™ Gateway Router

I have been enjoying my FiOS Quantum Gateway Router for months now.

I live in a multi level home.  We use TVs, smartphones, tablets, PCs and gaming consoles on all three levels of our home.

It used to be if  a device was wireless and not hard wired then the speed of delivery would be diminished.

The speed in which our FiOS Quantum Gateway Router delivers is unprecedented in this “in the moment” Social Media driven culture we live in.

I am happy that I can bring my smartphone or tablet  anywhere in my home and receive lightning speed results especially while live streaming a TV show with My FiOS Mobile App.

We are so excited!!

The FiOS Quantum Gateway Router has 2 new features:

  1. Parental Controls
  2. Guest Wi-Fi capabilities

The updates feature:

Guest Wi-Fi

  • Provide Wi-Fi access to visitors through a unique login and password, chosen by the customer, that is separate from the customer’s own home network.
  • Create a separate, secure WPA2 encrypted network just for guests, allowing Internet access. This is great for visitors and businesses.
  • Simplify connections with a dedicated, single sign-on ID and unique password.

Enhanced Parental Controls for Residential Customers — No More Arguing

  • Manage children’s Internet usage on each device.
  • Establish parental control rules conveniently from the MyFiOS App.
  • Turn Internet access on or off for any device.
  • Set time limits on any device on a daily or weekly basis.

God bears the world’s weight on His shoulder

God bears the world’s weight on His shoulder, yet holds His children in the palm of His hand. image by Katie Shea Design iPhone6 #VZWBuzz

“God bears the world’s weight on His shoulder, yet holds His children in the palm of His hand.”

A few weeks ago I was once again reminded that God is in control and holds me in the palm of his hand during every breath of my life.

It was January 1st, 2015 and my husband could not find his cross that I had given him for a special anniversary.  I asked my husband of 31 years where he had already looked for it so I could search out other places.  We were busy preparing for our New Year’s Day celebration and this was distracting my husband since the cross meant so much to him.  The idea of losing something so meaningful to him on New Year’s day was quite distressing.

I went upstairs to search other places and also to pray that God would impress on me where to begin my scavenger hunt.  Almost at once I was led to the side of our bed where my husband had dropped his NY Jets socks ( where he already had looked).  I was on my hands and knees examining all around and nothing.  I pushed the socks out of the way and heard a scraping sound.  I immediately picked up the socks and there was my husband’s necklace stuck to the bottom of the socks hooked on by a rung of the chain.

I had been praying that morning very specifically for something regarding my daughter. When I found the necklace I immediately knew God was communicating to me once again through a piece of jewelry.

Ten years ago, New Year’s Eve 2004 we were not sure if our daughter was going to see 2005 as she lay so ill in her hospital bed.

“All of a sudden I felt a rush of Peace and understanding.  I cried and cried.  My husband held onto me and just thought this was me cracking finally. I was in fact crying in joy. God had whispered to me that if I had lost my earring for days and I had in fact been to so many places in and around our house and the large hospital and my earring could be saved from a loss why would he not save my daughter who was far more precious than a golden earring. Then a Bible verse that I had recited so many times took on a whole new meaning.

Faith is being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you do not see. Hebrews 11:1

Was I sure that she was going to live an earthly life through all of this, the answer was no.

What I became sure of was that God had her in the palm of his hand and He was in charge not me.  As the days and weeks rolled on it became apparent that the plan was that she was going to live through this ordeal.” Read More: The Claddagh Earrings

Finding my husband’s necklace on New Year’s Day after crying out to God that very morning regarding our daughter and again asking for his help to find the necklace was a huge sign to me that God is holding me and my family in the palm of his hand as he always has.  Something that seems so trivial in the grand scheme of things is of great significance to me.

God speaks in the most simple ways in everyday situations if you have ears to hear and eyes to see.

VZ gateways 400 x 300

Verizon Communications is keeping pace with a new, faster gateways being rolled out by cable competitors with the launch of the FiOS Quantum Gateway, a device equipped with 802.11ac WiFi and a speedy coax-based home networking platform.   Verizon said the new device, also known as the FiOS-G1 100, supports dual-band 2.4 GHz/5 GHz 802.11ac with beamforming, and bakes in the 2.0 version of the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) platform, which supports in-home wireline throughputs of 400 Mbps in basic mode and up to 800 Mbps in the enhanced, turbo mode.   Targeting customers who have multiple devices hanging off their home networks and like to stream video, Verizon said the wireless end of the device can handle speeds up to 800 Mbps and an unobstructed range up to 325 feet, though both numbers are based on lab tests. – See more Here

Enjoying Quaker On The Go Breakfast With My Verizon Samsung GalaxyS5

Quaker Instant Oatmeal Pistachio Cherry shot by Katie Shea Design with Samsung GalaxyS5 VZWBuzz

I brought this gem of a quick breakfast with me to the hair salon.  The hair salon did not have a microwave so lucky for me they had hot water.

Just opened the oatmeal and filled with hot water to the line indicated, let it sit for about 3 minutes, mixed with a spoon and BAM a hot breakfast in my salon chair!

Sun-ripened cherries, roasted almonds, and tasty pistachios, Quaker®Real Medleys® Cherry Pistachio Oatmeal+  is my new on the go breakfast.

I usually am not a fan of the flavored ready-made oatmeal but my 2 favorite things are cherries and pistachios so I decided to give it a taste.  I was pleasantly surprised because it was not too sweet and tasted very hearty.

I will be taking these with me when I am traveling as well.

It comes in a convenient, portable package so you can eat it anywhere!

I need cases of this breakfast I love it so much!

It Made A Difference To That One!

One does not meet oneself until one catches the reflection from an eye other than human. Loren Eiseley Image shot by Katie Shea Design NYC with iPhone6 VZWBuzz

Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach every morning before he began his work. Early one morning, he was walking along the shore after a big storm had passed and found the vast beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see, stretching in both directions.

Off in the distance, the old man noticed a small boy approaching.  As the boy walked, he paused every so often and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea.  The boy came closer still and the man called out, “Good morning!  May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young boy paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves,” the youth replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.”

The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.”

The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

adapted from The Star Thrower, by Loren Eiseley (1907 – 1977)

Gazing from Bryant Park the other day I caught the glorious image of the Tower across the street  reflecting a cityscape of skyscrapers.

The image spoke to me about something that has been on my heart.

Last week I took my best friend Shea to the taping of the talk show The View.

Lots of planning needed to take place to make this happen seamlessly since Shea has MS and needs a wheelchair to get around.

We arrived in front of ABC dressed up in costume as requested for the Halloween taping. Our costumes were chosen based on their adaptability to accommodate the wheelchair.

Katie and Shea in costume for the View's Halloween taping NYC shot with iPhone6 VZWBuzz

We were outside waiting for more time than expected but we were enjoying all the people on the line exchanging stories and laughter.

We finally were ushered into the show’s waiting area and offered some snacks and to freshen up before we were seated.  All this is just normal procedure but very difficult for a person in a wheelchair.

When we were being seated “I” was asked if Shea would need to stay in the wheelchair or if she could take a regular seat.  She chose the regular seat.

While we were trying to get settled into our seats we were told to “sit down” by a very unfriendly security staff member.  It was quite clear that we were making the transition from a wheelchair to a regular seat and the tone used by this person as well as the strong request was uncalled for.

Her wheelchair was then whisked away to an undisclosed location to be returned at the end of the taping.

The taping took double the time that it was scheduled for and everybody was good sports about it.  When a situation happens like this it calls for more than usual the applause the audience is requested to provide as well as no bathroom breaks, food or water.

When you have disabilities, limitations or handicapped in anyway this all can wreak havoc for anyone possessing any of the these situations.

Again nobody complained and all complied with the requests for applause and audience participation.

When the show’s taping was finally over it was almost 4 pm in stark contrast to the projected time of 2 pm.  We decided to remain seated until the staffer brought back the wheelchair as the security team was dismissing our section first and then the rest of the sections of audience.

While we were quietly waiting, needing to desperately freshen up, quench our thirst and grab a snack we were approached by the same security staffer that initially told us to “Sit Down” in not in a nice tone.

He now told us to “Get Up!”  We told him we were waiting for Shea’s wheelchair to be brought to us. He then said we had to “Get Out of Here” in a nasty disrespectful tone.

When the staffer brought the wheelchair to Shea; she wanted to get into the wheelchair herself as she has requested me to not assist her with the things she can still do.  I turned my head and feigned taking a picture as to give her space and privacy.

I was then reprimanded rudely by the security staffer.  He told me to “get over there and help her instead of taking pictures” so we can get out of there!

I stared at him in outrage and disgust.  I did not respond to him with the words that were running through my mind.  I grabbed my handicapped best friend and made a beeline for the exit.

Shea was extremely upset as well as myself and decided to let some time go by before I proceeded with any action or reference to this incident.

The image of the Tower reflecting a cityscape of skyscrapers reminded me  that our words and actions are reflections that can cast either a good or bad impression.

“One does not meet oneself until one catches the reflection from an eye other than human.”  ~  Loren Eiseley

I tweeted a few words to the #TheView after we left the studio.  I am happy to say that the hard working Tom Kelly, Stand Up Comic and Warm Up Comedian For ABC’s The View  responded to my tweet almost immediately.

1b. Tom Kelly warming up the guests on the View's Halloween Show shot by KatieSheaDesign

Tom apologized for the actions of the security staffer and said he was grateful that we stuck around all those hours.

Tom’s words and swift reply made a difference to my friend “It made a difference to that one!”

Some ask why go to an event that clearly can be a challenge for someone in a wheelchair?

My answer is: “It makes a difference to this one!” who is my best friend.

After traveling across the country with Shea in a wheelchair these past few weeks I can say that I see things from her perspective.

A few tips to keep in mind when you see somebody disabled in a wheelchair:

*They are not weak because they are in a wheelchair

*They can still hear, speak and make decisions for themselves until otherwise indicated

*Please respect the person in the wheelchair by speaking directly to them

Lastly to the Security Staffer:

A handicapped person already feels different and ostracized from everyday life and society in general.  A day in the life of someone needing a wheelchair is rough to say the least.  Please exercise respect as if the person is standing on their own 2 feet.

With my FiOS Service I can now Store up to 200 hours of HD content and save full seasons of the series I love.

I can also record up to 12 shows at the same time and forget about waiting for reruns and fighting over the remote. With FiOS Quantum TV, my family will never have to miss the shows we love.

I also learned that when attending a TV show taping; smartphones need to be shut off since they interfere with the show’s wireless equipment.

Point and shoot cameras are allowed in between taping and so how lucky am I that I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy Camera.

The  Samsung Galaxy Camera combines high performance photography with the Android platform and Verizon 4G mobile internet connectivity. The result is a powerful point and shoot camera with a familiar, intuitive user interface.

I did not have my wireless turned on so my camera operated just as a point and shoot while in the studio.

The Samsung Galaxy Camera is a serious camera designed to capture amazing images in almost any situation. It starts with a quality 23mm wide-angle lens that gives you a 21x optical zoom and optical image stabilization. You can go fully automated, fully manual or select a setting (like aperture or shutter priority) and let the camera figure out the rest. With Samsung S Voice™, you can also tell your camera what to do. It will respond to commands like “smile,” “record video” and “zoom in.

I invite you to acquaint yourself a little more with  FiOS Quantum TV:

You can pause, play and rewind live action on any TV in your house with a set-top box.** Not just the ones connected to a DVR. You can even move from one room, grab a snack and pick your show up in another.

The capability to rewind “live action” for me is so helpful especially while watching a cooking show that I might be following along with a recipe.

Use the Verizon FiOS Mobile App† to access live TV and On Demand movies almost anywhere on any compatible device.

We are a family that travels and it is very comforting to retire to our hotel room and know we can still watch our favorite shows from wherever we might be resting our head those nights away from our home.

We upgraded this summer and are getting so much use out of all these features.

What TV shows or special series do you want to record to view/ binge using all the features FiOS Quantum TV has to offer?

I would love to hear what your Favorite TV Series are this fall!

Smartly Using Your SmartPhone

Give Someone the gift of your ~ FULL ~ attention.

“Leave your guns at the door.” ~  Dr. Travis Bradberry

 Image shot w/ HTC One® (M8) Smartphone

It all started with me getting off the train one stop too early resulting in arriving late for a scheduled appointment.

Yes I was one of those half dazed people hunched over a smartphone typing away listening to the conductor with one ear.

I continued to type as I exited the train finishing my email response.  I started for what I thought was the Hoboken platform and had a rush of remorse wash over me in a cold sweat.

My very punctual eldest son was waiting for me in Hoboken so we could hop on a Path train to the World Trade Center.

Every year he and I pay our respects to all that were lost.  This year we had an appointment for 12:00 noon to visit the newly opened 9/11 Memorial Museum.

We ended up changing our appointed time and my son expressed his concern for my lack of awareness because of my smartphone usage.

So fresh in my mind this experience, I had a heightened awareness for the rest of the day of all of my surroundings.

What I noticed was the majority of people I encountered were either bent over on their smartphones, chatting on them or snapping pictures.  There was not much interaction with the people they physically were with.

I continued to observe as we traveled home on the train and grabbed a bite to eat.

The more I concentrated on not using my smartphone and engaging with my sons, the more  I could not help but notice what was not going on around us.

People are living in their individual separate worlds simulating togetherness by physically being present but not actually being present with the people present with them in real life.

I started doing some research on smartphone usage, etiquette, addiction and abuse.

I came across the following post that I feel can be applied to most everyday situations and/or circumstances:

Why Successful People Never Bring Smartphones Into Meetings by Dr. Travis Bradberry

You can fill in the blank with just about any life situation in the following sentence although the author had used “meetings” in his sentence.

“Why do so many people—especially successful people—find smartphone use in _____ to be inappropriate? When you take out your phone it shows a:”

As I ran down the list I realized that I have been lacking in every area cited but not in meetings; even worse my personal life.  I have been allowing my work life to always overlap into my personal life to the point of getting off a train prematurely.

I am a digital correspondent that curates and delivers content for a living.  My cameras and smartphones are always in my hand.  I am a member of the #VZWBuzz influence team as well as the #LifeOnFiOS influencer team.  I evaluate new technology, use it and write about it.  I cannot help always using my smartphone or can I??

I decided to design an infographic sourced from “Why Successful People Never Bring Smartphones Into Meetings”.

This infographic features my smartphone offenses in a way I can communicate to myself and my audience.

These offenses can be applied to most smartphone scenarios that involve real life people vs any technological community.

The only time I will deem it suitable in a meeting to actually have my smartphone out and actively using it will be at my next  #VZWBuzz Team meeting.

Must Have FiOS Quantum TV Downton Abbey Fans!

George Clooney to Guest-Star In a Downton Abbey Christmas Sketch

George Clooney Guest Star in a Downton Abbey Christmas Sketch Source Vanity Fair

“What does this mean for us exactly? The actor, regrettably, will not pop up on a future episode of Downton Abbey as a legit character, like Lord Clooningham, a dashing love interest whose parlor tricks endear him to everyone in the household except the ever-suspecting Dowager.

Instead, he will appear during a one-off Downton-set sketch that we stateside viewers will have to view secondhand on YouTube.”  more:

I am a little disappointed that George, as reported will not be a legit character on Downton Abbey but……

I am so excited that I have FiOS Quantum TV so I can record the full series of Downton Abbey as well as some of my other favorite TV series this fall!

YES I said the FULL Series!  How can I do that without filling up the DVR??

Record up to 12 shows at the same time.* Forget about waiting for reruns and fighting over the remote. With FiOS Quantum TV, you’ll never miss the shows you love.

Why would we EVER need to have the capability to record up to 12 shows at the same time??

We all have our favorite shows and add in specials that come up… those shows can add up rather quickly.  Compound all the sporting events (we do not all share the same teas in our house) our DVR is action packed!

Happy 350th Birthday, New York

Happy 350th Birthday NYC by Katie Shea Design #VZWBuzz

September 8th, 2014 is the 350th anniversary of the surrender of Dutch New Amsterdam to the British and the settlement’s renaming as New York. read more..

Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant surrendered New Amsterdam, the capital of New Netherland, to an English naval squadron under Colonel Richard Nicolls. Stuyvesant had hoped to resist the English, but he was an unpopular ruler, and his Dutch subjects refused to rally around him. Following its capture, New Amsterdam’s name was changed to New York, in honor of the Duke of York, who organized the mission. read more….

How Did the Boroughs Get Their Names?

In 1609 Robert Guet called the island “Mannahata,” after Native American names for the area. Henry Hudson referred to Staten Eylandt after the States General—Netherlands’ governing body. The Bronx is named after Jonas Bronck, who settled in the area in 1639. Brooklyn refers to Breukelen, the Dutch village in the Netherlands. Queens was named after Queen Catherine of Braganza, wife of King Charles II of England (1630-1685).

How did the Boroughs get their Names

How Did New York Get The Nickname “The Big Apple”?

The Big Apple was first popularized as a reference to New York City by John J. Fitz Gerald in a number of New York Morning Telegrapharticles in the 1920s in reference to New York horse-racing. The earliest of these was a casual reference on May 3, 1921:

  1. P. Smith, with Tippity Witchet and others of the L. T. Bauer string, is scheduled to start for “the big apple” to-morrow after a most prosperous Spring campaign at Bowie and Havre de Grace.[10]

Fitz Gerald referred to the “big apple” frequently thereafter.[11] He explained his use in a February 18, 1924, column under the headline “Around the Big Apple”:

The Big Apple. The dream of every lad that ever threw a leg over a thoroughbred and the goal of all horsemen. There’s only one Big Apple. That’s New York.

Two dusky stable hands were leading a pair of thoroughbred around the “cooling rings” of adjoining stables at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans and engaging in desultory conversation.

“Where y’all goin’ from here?” queried one.

“From here we’re headin’ for The Big Apple,” proudly replied the other.

“Well, you’d better fatten up them skinners or all you’ll get from the apple will be the core,” was the quick rejoinder.

The term “big apple” was used by Frank Sinatra speaking to opera singer Dorothy Kirsten (who was his co-star in the late 1940s-early 1950s NBC radio program “Light Up Time” on a show that aired on 03/28/1950 at about the 2:30 mark. The show may be heard here.

Frank Sinatra also contributed to New York’s notoriety when he recorded the famous song New York, New York.

Theme from New York, New York” (or “New York, New York“) is the theme song from the Martin Scorsese film New York, New York(1977), composed by John Kander, with lyrics by Fred Ebb. It was written for and performed in the film by Liza Minnelli. It remains one of the best-remembered songs about New York City.

In 1979, it was recorded by Frank Sinatra, for his album Trilogy: Past Present Future (1980), and has since become closely associated with him. He occasionally performed it live with Minnelli as a duet. Sinatra recorded it a second time in duet with Tony Bennett for his 1993 album Duets.

Start spreading the news

I am leaving today

I want to be a part of it

New York, New York

These vagabond shoes

Are longing to stray

Right through the very heart of it

New York, New York

I wanna wake up in a city

That doesn’t sleep

And find I’m king of the hill

Top of the heap

These little town blues

Are melting away

I’ll make a brand new start of it

In old New York

If I can make it there

I’ll make it anywhere

It’s up to you

New York, New York

New York, New York

I want to wake up

in a city that never sleeps

And find I’m a number one, top of the list

King of the hill

A number one

These little town blues

Oh they’re melting away

I’m gonna make a brand new start of it

In old New York

And If I can make it there

What Will Be On Your Coffee Table?? Ikea Catalog 2015

Ikea 2015 Catalog #IKEAcatalog Press Event NYC photo Credit Katie Shea Design 1 Where the everyday begins

IKEA announced on July 16th, 2014 that the new 2015 IKEA U.S. catalog, filled with design inspiration and new products for every area of the home, will be available to the public starting this August. Themed Where the Everyday Begins and Ends, this years catalog highlights the two important rooms where people sleep and get ready every morning and night the bedroom and the bathroom. Readers will learn how IKEA can help them make the beginning and end of their days more comfortable, more calm and more organized by designing their spaces based on their own routines, utilizing smart space solutions, and expressing their personal styles.

After more than 50 years in the furniture business, Ikea decided to perform its very first global company survey. The goal of the survey was to “[dig] into how the world wakes up by tuning in to eight different metropoles in eight different countries [to investigate] the morning routines, habits and wishes of those who live there.” Ikea then used the study’s findings—sourced from residents of Berlin, London, Moscow, Mumbai, New York, Paris, Shanghai and Stockholm—to inform the creations of several new products in its 2015 collection. contd..

Last week I attended the launch of Ikea’s 2015 Catalog in NYC.  Local influencers were invited to a slumber party themed event at a pop up space in lower Manhattan. The space was styled with bedroom products such as bedding, closet and wardrobe pieces along with vanity displays.

“The bedroom is not just for sleep.  There is a family bed where movie nights are viewed and everyone has a spot to sit.  A private room for the family.”

Do not worry about the size of your living space because outside is your living room.

By 2050, 86% of developed countries will be living in urban areas.  A world that exists outside of our four walls.

A rise in “Small Space” living in the US  in order to have a world that exists outside of our four walls and has nothing to do with an economic decline.

Becky’s Inspiration: materials, visual texture and tactile.

Do not be afraid of color, be afraid of beige (humor).

Families are learning to live together again in their space.

The color that sells is beige.  It is a delicate balancing act of bringing in color.  Different pieces with color really have different places in Ikea.

The lowest price point products are the hardest to design, finding materials, suppliers and stackability is what goes into Ikea’s equation to arrive at the best product and price point.

Ikea is celebrated as an accessible brand.

“Respect to the range”.

Ikea speaks to their customers through their room settings in their stores.

Millennials are breaking all the rules, teaching us what life will be going forward.  They are not quite as interested as having a home for 30 years, a job for 30 years and they really see the World as their opportunity.

What millennials own is temporary.  “The 2015 collection is inspired by millennials”.

Baby Boomers/ Flat Age Society are refusing to age the same way their parents did.  They are living, working and staying young longer.  A lot like the millennials.  Choosing to downsize, living in small spaces and are not as afraid as their parents were about what is coming in the next 3-5 years.

What separates millennials from the Flat Age? Flat Age wants luxury and comfort, where as millennials are fine with not worrying about luxury.

Ikea can provide comfort and luxury with their products for the Baby Boomers/Flat Age Society as well.

Baby Boomers/Flat Age Society is motivating Becky, Ikea’s designer .

What keeps Becky up at night:

How can Becky convince the Baby Boomers/Flat Age Society what Ikea has to offer will last the Boomers for  10, 15 and 25 years if they want it to.  Also, how can Becky can convince the millennials that Ikea has something that is not just  beige..

Ikea does not have a specific generational segment they cater to.

Ikea tries to reach all the generations.

The 2015 catalog will be available in 67 printed editions, 32 languages and 46 countries/territories. The IKEA catalog is now the largest print production ever to be printed on 100% FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper. The entire IKEA catalog production chain, from forest to printer, is FSC-certified to ensure a more sustainable origin of the wood.

Carmine’s: Talking 42 Ounce Porterhouse Steak, Ragu, Wings, NYC, Vegas with Executive Chef Glenn Rolnick

Carmine’s is a family style restaurant offering exceptional value to its guests through the many dishes of Southern Italian cuisine. Restaurateur Artie Cutler crafted the Carmine’s concept with a singular vision; bringing his guests “wow-factor” sized portions and making any meal feel like an Italian American wedding feast. Platters of homestyle antipasto, pasta, decadent seafood or meat entrees, and of course homemade desserts are all staples at Carmine’s, meant for sharing amongst friends and family. When great food and wine are supported by friendly and knowledgeable service, the results are magic - “we want every day to feel like a Sunday afternoon at Grandma’s!”

A Special Edition of The Food & Booze Show was broadcast live from Carmine’s NYC with special on site guests Kathleen DeCosmo and Susan Serra on the ground chatting with Executive Chef Glenn Rolnick.

GLENN ROLNICK is the Director of Culinary Operations of Alicart Restaurant Group, a position he’s held for ten years. He has appeared on Good Morning America and QVC and has written for Time, New York Times, Gourmet, The New Yorker and Food Arts.

While we were preparing our tastebuds for the onslaught of Carmine’s heaven, we were schooled in Carmine’s history by Executive Chef and Author Glenn Rolnick.

25 years open soon for NYC’s 91st location!
20 years at Carmine’s Times Square (1.24 million customers yearly).

Carmine’s locations are Tropicana Hotel and Casino, Atlantic City, NJ, Times Square NYC, Upper West Side 91st NYC, Atlantis Resort, Bahamas, Washington DC and The Forum Shops at Caesars Las Vegas.

The Washington DC location has 25,000 sq feet, 9 private dining rooms, 700 seats, and a secret service entrance.

1 year for Las Vegas and listed in Top Ten Restaurant Vegas- USA Today : 10 BEST HOMESTYLE IN LAS VEGAS, NV.

The 28,000-square-foot restaurant, designed by Bill Johnson of Johnson Studios, features the trademark touches that grace all Carmine’s locations – high ceilings, antique chandeliers and warm, homey colors. Walls are lined with black and white photographs depicting the Southern Italian families whose culinary traditions inspired the restaurant’s timeless menu. There are 75 Chandeliers, 6 portraits and 7500 pictures in Carmine’s Las Vegas.

Trivia for Carmine’s Las Vegas First Year:

We were treated to several dishes on the menu that were familiar to me as a regular guest and a few that I have never tasted before.

Carmine’s Celebrates
Classic Italian Recipes for Everyday Feasts

Following their successful Carmine’s Family-Style Cookbook, Carmine’s Celebrates is perfect for big, abundant family-and-friend gatherings: weekly feasts, Sunday dinners, and holiday celebrations

Carmine’s is founded on the twin concepts of deliciousness and abbondanza. In their wildly popular Times Square flagship location and their other restaurants in New York City, Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Washington, DC, and Paradise Island, Bahamas, the tables are filled with giant platters of pasta, steaks, chicken, vegetables and more. And every single diner has a smile on his face. Now that concept comes home from the masters. Italian food is the nation’s most popular food both in restaurants and in home kitchens. In Carmine’s Celebrates, home cooks will learn how to make more than one hundred dishes in happy-making quantities. Nothing is difficult to make, serve or store. Each dish uses grocery store ingredients and extracts the best flavor from them so anyone can be an amazing cook. There is a special emphasis on “everyday” holidays, such as weekend family dinners, and also on traditional holiday food for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Dishes include:
—Crostini with Cannellini Bean Dip
—Sea Scallops Wrapped in Pancetta
—Mussels Fra Diavolo
—Spaghetti Carbonara
—Beefsteak Fiorentina
—Chicken Cacciatore

Giving Thanks on Memorial Day

Sergeant Warren O.Ostin Paying Tribute To our Veterans and Fallen Heroes

CAMP LEJEUNE — Twenty-two hundred Marines and sailors from Camp Lejeune are preparing to deploy off the coast of Libya in northern Africa. They said goodbye to their families Monday afternoon, and they’ll be leaving in the days ahead.

“There’s always in the back of your mind what if, what could happen,” Marine wife Carrie Cochran said.  Continue Reading…

March 2011 this image flashed across the TV of our Nephew Warren O. Ostin preparing to be deployed.  Our hearts sank with sorrow and swelled with pride all at the same time.

Warren O Ostin Deploying

Our nephew called me himself to tell me that he was going to be deployed overseas earlier than expected.  I held back my overwhelming tears as he filled me in on what he could, all the while reassuring me that all would be all right and that he was ready.

I got off the phone, cried my eyes out and begged God to protect him and bring him back to us.  My nephew is also my God Child and with that I wanted to make sure he felt connected always.

My Dad, an army veteran himself had given me a necklace several years before he passed away.  The necklace was a pair of praying hands with the Serenity Prayer inscribed on the back.

I decided to give this necklace to my nephew to have with him while he served his deployments. I made him promise he would bring it back to me when he was all done serving our country.  Along with the necklace I made a specific time of the day that I would be praying for him EST.  I wanted him to feel connected no matter where in the world he was always.

Warren O Ostin Afghanistan

Our nephew finished serving our country full time and is now a Sergeant in the US Marine Reserves.

I never asked him about the necklace or if he had it with him while deployed.

One day after he was home for good I received a phone call from Warren.  He asked me if I had seen his latest Facebook image.

He explained that he had carried the Praying Hands necklace with him the entire time he was in the Marines.  He went on to say that he wanted to have the Praying Hands with him always so he had them tattooed to his chest forever.

Praying Hands

I was speechless and engulfed with emotion.  Having two sons has taught me that men use actions and few words to express their emotions.  My nephew Warren is forever wearing his expression of gratitude to God and his country for returning home to us!

This Memorial Day I sat behind my nephew thanking God for the opportunity to share a day with him in person.  Enjoying watching him watch the game, never forgetting that I was not sure I would ever have this opportunity to see him smile or hear him laugh.

Sargeant Warren O. Ostin at Citizens Bank Field Philadelphia watching Game

I sat back in my seat praying for all who have lost a loved one in service to our country.  Counting our blessings for our nephew and all that have and continue to put themselves at risk for the United States.

My Memorial Day Thanksgiving Toast Cheers

This year I raised my glass in a Memorial Day, Thanksgiving toast to my nephew and his safe return home.

Thank You Sergeant Warren O. Ostin for your Service to this country!

Happy Mother’s Day: A Musical Tribute

Happy Mother's Day by Visual Poetics CURATED by Katie Shea Design

Raised by a single mother, Kevin Durant is the NBA’s 2013-14 Most Valuable Player.

Kevin Durant’s powerful, emotional MVP acceptance speech went viral impacting the hearts of so many.

Kevin recounted that he fell in love with basketball in the second grade.

Kevin shared his memory of the little family’s first apartment. “No bed, no furniture.  We sat in the living room and hugged.  We felt like we made it!”

This video very personally touched my heart as well as this recently released single “Happy Mother’s Day” by Visual Poetics:

Happy Mother's Day by Visual Poetics

It is truly poetic that this “Happy Mother’s Day” single was released just a few days before Kevin Durant’s beautiful tribute to his single mother.

Kevin’s tribute to his mom depicts exactly what this Mother’s Day single is expressing musically.

Kevin praised his mother, honoring her and all that she did for him and his brother:

“YOU made us believe,

kept us off the street,

put clothes on our back

food on the table

went to sleep hungry.

You sacrificed for us

YOUR the real MVP

Symbolic image of a man who plays basketball

“Happy Mother’s Day” by Visual Poetics speaks of the single mom’s struggles, the feelings of the fatherless child and the encouragement that is felt by the strength spoken and exemplified by a single mom.

So uncannily parallel with Kevin Durant’s emotional acceptance speech to this recently released “Happy Mother’s Day” single.

Join me in congratulating Kevin Durant’s Mom Wanda Pratt in accomplishing so much as a single mother and making her son proud to call her Mom.

I want to invite you to also listen to this “Happy Mother’s Day” single by Visual Poetics:

Happy Mother's Day Sound Cloud by Visual Poetics

 Happy Mother’s Day

To every person that has been a MOM to someone!

About the Artist Visual Poetics:

Visual Poetics is the founding member and long time producer of the underground group known as Little Egypt. Releasing several albums and touring extensively, Little Egypt became known for combining that raw Brooklyn Hip-Hop stage energy with conscious level lyrics.

In particular, Visual Poetics’ style is that of an old school storyteller.  Weaving vivid images with complex metaphors, Vis (pronounced Viz) has been known to resurface from time to time dropping political pieces and other collaborative efforts over the past few years.

This chapter, Happy Mother’s Day, includes heavy production work from Compton’s own multitalented Trae Sevn and Khordz (of Little Egypt) combined with the smooth sounds of soulful singer/lyricist Madd Mary (look out!) for this heartfelt shout out and dedication to single parents worldwide.

Saying Goodbye with Google Hangouts

Saying Goodbye with Google Hangouts by Katie Shea Design #KatieSheaDesign

My husband and I had flown down to Florida April 2013 to spend some time with his Dad. My father in law had been battling prostate cancer for over a decade and it was getting worse.

We had noticed his accelerated deterioration over the previous months  on our Google Hangout chats.

We met online very regularly with him and his wife Laura.  We were able to spend time with him and discern that indeed the doctor’s prognosis was pretty accurate and he did not have much time left as reported.

We figured that we would be flying down frequently to visit as his disease progressed.

When we arrived we soon realized that our Dad’s health was much more further along than even the Google Hangouts had revealed.

The nurse that attended my father in law took me aside quietly and let me know that he had been earnestly awaiting his son’s arrival.  She also gave me her opinion that he was “waiting” to see his son.  I got the shivers as she communicated what I knew was very near.

My father in law’s health declined rapidly within 24 hours of that conversation.

Hospice was called in and set up bedside care around the clock.  This all happened within three days of our arrival to visit him.

We kept in constant communication with our three grown children through Google Hangouts and text messaging .

Three days passed with Hospice tending to my father in law.  Hospice decided that his passing did not seem to be imminent so they removed their care for the time being and were on standby.

My father in law became cognitive for a very small burst.  We had the Hospice music therapist come by and we all had a music jam session that seemed to brighten him up for a short bit.

My Father in law was “Music” a professional Jazz musician, educator and an author:

Emile graduated from the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. He later earned a Masters of Music Ed at New Jersey City University. Emile De Cosmo has been active as a teacher, musician, and jazz clinician for over 50 years. Playing woodwind instruments, he has freelanced in the New York area with many noted musicians on TV and radio commercial sound tracks, club dates, concerts, and shows. Formerly an Adjunct Professor of Jazz Improvisation at New Jersey City University, an Applied Music instructor at New Jersey City University and Farleigh Dickinson University, Concert/Marching /Jazz Band Director at Fort Lee High School, Artist in Residence/Teacher /Mentor for the Jersey City school district and author of 25 books on Jazz improvisation including the Polytonal Rhythm Series” Read

The jam session was his very last.  My husband picked his dad up and put him to bed that night.  His condition worsened and Hospice was called to come back and evaluate.

The very kind Hospice nurse took me aside and asked me if there was anybody that my father in law could possibly be waiting for.  I knew exactly what she meant.  I let her know that it could possibly be his grandchildren.

We had kept our children very informed of their grandfather’s condition and they were on standby ready to book flights at a moments notice.

It was very difficult to tell them exactly when to get on the plane since my father in law’s health had wavered over the time we were there.

My husband and I had prepared for the possibility that his dad could pass very quickly and that our children might not be able to arrive in time to see their grandfather in person one last time.

We had all of our children, cousins and friends connected on Google Hangouts in the event we needed to have an emergency meeting.

We gathered some family members to my in law’s home, connected with our children on Google Hangout and had family time with my father in law.

My father in law was in a semi conscious state so we brought my husband’s tablet to his bedside.  We placed the tablet right beside him as our children spoke to him loving words, entertained him wearing crazy hats and mustaches, shared anecdotes of times gone by and impersonated their grandfather which seemed to rally him to a moment of consciousness.  His mouth formed the words “I Love You” to his grandchildren.  Time stopped for all of us in the room and on Google Hangouts.  Our children all told their grandfather how much they loved him and how much he meant to them all of their lives.  They told him to rest and he will always be alive in their hearts.  They blew kisses to him as he tried so very hard to open his eyes one last time to say goodbye.

My father in law passed nine hours later ( May 3rd, 2013) peacefully surrounded by his devoted wife Laura, my husband, my sister in law and myself.

My husband and I are so grateful for the technology that enabled us to work remotely so we had the ability to stay with my father in law in his last several weeks of life.

We are very grateful for Google Hangouts that gave our children the ability to visit with their grandfather and spend time with him in his last hours of life.

What is Google Hangouts:

If you have never used Google Hangouts, it’s a very powerful messaging tool.

Hangouts lets you send messages, emoji, photos, and start video calls with your friends and family. You can start a Hangout from Gmail, Google+, your Android or iOS device, or with the Chrome extension.e.

It’s also a powerful video capturing tool.

You can turn any Hangout into a live video call with up to 10 people. Then turn that video call into a recording and make it publicly available on Google+ or your YouTube channel.

You can even share your screen with the audience if you need to demonstrate any of your products or services.

Pro tip: If you share the video on YouTube, you can download the mp4 file of the recording. This makes it easy for you to do some light editing or add open/end slates to your video.

You can then re-upload the edited video onto another YouTube channel or the same one and use that video to share with your customers.

Under Magnolia : A Wordsmith’s Banquet Captivating All Your Senses

Under Magnolia by Frances Mayes Available April 1st, 2014 Shot with a Samsung Galaxy Camera #VZWBuzz by Katie Shea Design

“I’ll always marvel at the liveliness of southern speech-so full of metaphor and hyperbole, quirks and vividness.”  ~ Frances Mayes

A few pages into “Under Magnolia” I grabbed a brand new notebook along with a light blue highlighter to keep by my side.  I found myself lingering on sentences and discovering words that I wanted to remember. Reading ever so slowly, stopping to pause, jotting down words and quotes  to come back to was my journey through “Under Magnolia.”

“Images are the pegs holding down memory’s billowing tent.” ~ Frances Mayes

Frances Mayes is a wordsmith who paints vivid images using each word like a paintbrush stroke spreading color all over her canvas. Frances shared her childhood memories with wit, humor, metaphors and hyperboles.

“Families all over have secrets and weird people and foibles, and mine did too.” ~ Frances Mayes

Getting to know Frances as a child, walking alongside her into womanhood certainly exhibited that:

“Your own will can trump how you were raised.” ~ Frances Mayes

My heart ached with sorrow for Frances especially in her fourteenth year. (You will have to read the book to find out!)

“The heart is a lonely hunter.” ~ Frances Mayes

Despite riding on a bumpy road with so many twists and turns, living through losses of great magnitude (“She is the lining of my coat I will have to shed.” ~ Frances Mayes)  she maintained her optimism.

“Everyday an air of possibility.” ~ Frances Mayes

Ever so true that statement!  Frances Mayes is the author of many books:  Bella Tuscany, Every Day in Tuscany, The Tuscan Sun Cookbook and the NY Times Best Selling novel  “Under The Tuscan Sun” that went on to be made into an  iconic movie. This past summer Frances and her husband Ed released their first line of  hand-chosen Italian wines available from Tuscan Sun Wines.

Tondo Tondo Tuscan Sun Wines Tuscan Sun Wines capture France’s sense of wonder and “Prima Famiglia”: Family First Prima Famiglia Family First Family is the epicenter to the Southern and Tuscan lifestyle that Frances describes in “Under Magnolia.”

I had the pleasure of experiencing Frances and Ed Maye’s Southern, Tuscan hospitality while visiting with them at their mountain house in Tuscany last July.

Eight cities around the world will be hosting Social Media Week events this month – everywhere from Bangalore to Lagos to Milan to Tokyo. Living in the Moment “Just Like Him”.

Living in the Moment by Katie Shea Design

“Experience this moment to its fullest.” ~Zen Proverb #quotes

Too often as parents we rush through the days, years then decades with our children and wake up one day with not children… but adults.

My husband and I decided long ago that spending time with our children was one of our top priorities always.  We have maintained that priority even into adulthood with all three of our children and our son in law as well.

There was a very popular song in the 1970’s that I know many of us Baby Boomers sang with our transistor radios, 45’s and cassette recorders. While we sang the song I am sure we did not realize what exactly we were saying as  we belted it out over and over again.

My husband, being a professional musician was very aware of the lyrics to songs as he also sang them over and over during his many gigs in the 70’s and 80’s.

So in the beginnings of our courtship we sat with our cup of coffee in hand in our third floor walk-up and discussed what our children would potentially look like, who they would take after etc..

Music was always one of the springboards of conversation for us and continues to be a very powerful voice for all generations.

While discussing our future as potential parents, my husband referenced the popular song Cat’s in the Cradle“.  He expressed his goal to me that he wanted to be the father that always had time for his children.  When they grew up they would always have time for him because he would have taught them with his actions and his words that they were and are always his priority.

The image above is my husband spending time with our 26 year old son who on that particular day invited us to come along on his photo shoot just to spend time with us as we always have done with him.  He invites us into his world and shares his life with us even as an adult living on his own.  My husband has succeeded in his goal as being the father he always wanted to be and not the father in the song “Cat’s in the Cradle

Cat’s in the Cradle is a 1974 folk rock song by Harry Chapin from the album Verities & Balderdash. The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1974. As Chapin’s only No. 1 hit song, it became the best known of his work and a staple for folk rock music.

The song is told in first-person by a father who is too busy to spend time with his son. Though the son asks him to join in childhood activities, the father always responds with little more than vague promises of spending time together in the ‘future’. While wishing to spend time with his father, the son starts to model himself on his father’s behaviour, hence the verse wishing to be “just like him.” The final two verses reverse the roles, where the father asks his grown-up son to spend time with him after his graduation, and then later come to visit, but the son responds that he is now too busy to find the time for his father. The father then reflects that they are both alike, saying “my boy was just like me.”

Christmas is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. Roasted to perfection. Deep in color with a nice sheen of natural oils. This coffee offers a healthy body, strong aroma and a smooth finish. Fairway’s own delicious coffee.

Compatible with Keurig coffee machines, the 100% Arabic, kosher-certified coffees are available in six flavors: Organic Original Blend, Organic Decaf Blend, Organic Dark Roast, Supreme Blend, Italian Roast and Hazelnut.

The design of the pods are quite impressive.  The coffee flavor really comes through and I believe the construction of the pods have a lot to do with the full bodied flavor in my cup.

Radiant Orchid, Pantone’s Color of the Year 2014 “Everything’s Coming Up Orchid”

Swatch -pantone-color-of-year-20131206-001

Pantone, an X-Rite company and the global authority, announced 12/05/13 PANTONE® 18-3224 Radiant Orchid, a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple, as the color of the year for 2014.

About the PANTONE Color of the Year

AP Photo Karly Domb Sadof a model walks the runway during the Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2013 fashion show during Fashion Week

Officially known as Radiant Orchid, the tropical shade is a color-wheel contrast to green, said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, but it’s not the red that would have been a more obvious choice. “It’s a little different, it’s a little off the beaten path, and it’s not a primary color,” she explains. “It’s an invitation to innovation. The purple family offers (an) opportunity to do creative things.” Read more:

The color of the year selection requires careful consideration and, to arrive at the selection, Pantone quite literally combs the world looking for color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films that are in production, traveling art collections, hot new artists, popular travel destinations and other socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from technology, availability of new textures and effects that impact color, and even upcoming sports events that capture worldwide attention.

Manufacturers of all stripes tend to jump on the bandwagon and slap the year’s hot, new color on their products in an effort to punch up their line ups.

Keurig, for instance, plans to unveil its MINI Plus coffee maker in the color of radiant orchid in February 2014, according to spokeswoman Lizzie Manganiello.

This past summer I had the pleasure of being a guest of Silvia and Riccardo Baracchi and enjoying their hospitality in their historic luxury resort.

The typical Tuscan villa which dates back to the 17th century was the home of the famous poet Antonio Guadagnoli. Now completely restored and transformed into countryside Relais; Il Falconiere it is part of the prestigious chain Relais & Chateaux, which exuberates the art of hospitality. The old olive groves and the new vineyards surround the property.

Riccardo with his son Benedetto strongly desired to continue the family tradition of grape growing and wine -making, which began in 1860, adding now a modern and high quality character.

Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet and Trebbiano: these are the grapes which liven up Baracchi wines. A tribute to the land of Cortona and to the pleasure of the good wine. An invitation to taste the evolution of an ancient family tradition.
