Turn Off The Scoreboard

Featured

love “keeps no record of wrongs” (1 Cor. 13-5) and (Eph. 4-32). KatieSheaDesign

How many feel that a score is being kept, a record of wrongs accumulated throughout the years?

Most times we are not even aware that we have hurt someone with our words, actions or even a facial expression.

Digital communication in the form of email and text messaging as well as social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have now brought in a new way to possibly offend so many with simply a key stroke.

Whether we realize it or not we all keep a scoreboard in some form.

This life is a numbers game at every turn.

Let’s begin with the day we are born:

  • How much does the baby weigh?
  • What day you are born determines what year you will graduate high school.  (You might miss the kindergarten cutoff by one day and miss a whole year.)
  • SAT scores determine college placement and scholarships.
  • Where one graduates from can sometimes mean the difference in your salary.
  • Area codes and zip codes denote your financial class.
  • How many “Likes” on an Instagram or Facebook Post can determine a person’s value in different circles.

“I am deeply grateful that God turns off the scoreboard when I fail. He doesn’t simply forgive when we repent; He removes our sin as far as the east is from the west (Ps. 103:12). With God, forgiveness means that our sin is out of sight and out of mind. May He give us grace to extend forgiveness to those around us.” Continue reading Here.

A dear friend of mine asked me why I observe the season of Lent.

My answer is that this designated time is for me to intentionally focus on God and prayer. A time for self-examination and penitence in preparation for Resurrection Sunday also known as Easter Sunday.

An opportunity to Turn Off The Scoreboard, pause, examine, refrain, repent and reset.

Do you want to “Turn Off The Scoreboard”

How do you “Turn Off The Scoreboard”?

On Wednesday, May 13, 2015, Applebee’s hosted  a street party “Taste the Change” in Times Square to celebrate it’s new menu.  The festivities included free samples of new menu items, such as the new Triple Hog Dare Ya sandwich, a takeover of twelve of Times Square’s famous billboards, complete with social media integration; live music featuring performances from Jason Derulo, X Ambassadors and DJ Fitz (of Fitz and the Tantrums); games and activities for guests to enjoy.

The tagged tweets #WatchApplebees of those who could not make it to New York on May 13 appeared on a massive Times Square billboard during the event between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. EDT. Applebee’s shared live photographs from the event and the digital displays from the Times Square billboards at www.applebeestastethechangefest.com, where guests whose images appeared on the billboard were able to share via Facebook and Twitter with the headline, “Applebee’s threw a party in Times Square and I was there!”

Hosting a  live Periscope video broadcast was Vincenzo Landino, who with more than 40,000 video followers is among Twitter’s leading live video personalities.  Landino broadcasted live from Times Square in 30-minute segments throughout the event.

Later this month, the nearly 2,000 Applebee’s locations across the country will update their menus with eight new or improved sandwiches and appetizers, including the Triple Hog Dare Ya, Brew Pub Philly steak sandwich and Maple Bacon Chicken Piadini.

“An over-the-top sampling party at the Crossroads of the World is the perfect way to introduce and celebrate our new menu,” said Applebee’s Senior Vice President of Culinary and Marketing Darin Dugan.  “We’re proud of our new food and we’re inviting the world to give it a try.”

American Kobe Style Meatballs made in house, cooked really slow in Pomodoro sauce (chunky tomato sauce), parmesan cheese and chopped fresh parsley on top.

Maple Mustard Chicken Piadini

Piadina is a wrap, it’s like a tortilla but it’s made from a thin dough, very trendy right now.  Piadina is almost like a really thin flat bread dough that applebee’s cooks on the grill.  They  roll cedar grilled chicken, cheddar cheese, bacon and a maple glaze on the inside with some fresh greens rolled up nice and hot off the grill.

Triple Hog Dare Ya

Three Hogs in it:  Black forest ham, bacon, and slow roasted pulled pork tossed in a chili salsa verde on a toasted ciabatta bread with cheddar cheese, crispy frizzled onions, and Applebee’s homemade steak sauce. My Favorite is the Triple Hop Dare Ya!

Shredded Brisket Nachos

Beautiful tender, slow roasted brisket tossed in salsa verde sauce on top of chips.  Three different cheeses: white cheddar, yellow cheddar and a white queso dip.  It has roasted poblanos, roasted jalapenos, caramelized onions, pico de gallo, all in a beautiful white silky sauce layered with the beef brisket on top of that with Applebee’s nacho lettuce (cabbage and shredded iceberg, pico de gallo, scallions, cilantro and fresh sliced jalapenos) and then chipotle lime seasoning on top.

Michael Slavin, the corporate executive chef for Applebee’s product development (developed all these recipes)  gave us all the details in a special live interview at Applebee’s Times Square New Menu Tasting Event May 13th.

The event was a huge success with so many participating all across various social media platforms.

The use of the live streaming app Periscope  by Vincenzo Landino brought the experience of the “Live” event to the masses!

Welcoming and Influencing Your Community

Featured

Welcome to My Community by Katie Shea Design

Long ago were the memories of the wafting aroma of freshly baked cake, bread or the sweet fragrances of fresh-cut flowers being ready for the welcoming of a new family into the neighborhood community.

Growing up in my “Baby Boomer Generation” there was a welcoming protocol to most neighborhoods.

Whenever we would see a moving truck pull into the neighborhood the children would get excited and wonder if the new family would have kids that could be possible new playmates.

The “grownups” as we called them would get busy putting together cakes, cupcakes, meals or a bunch of handpicked flowers to call on the new neighbors welcoming them to the neighborhood.

The families would take turns greeting the new neighbors by knocking on the front door or ringing their doorbell and introducing themselves carrying homemade, welcoming gifts.

There was also something called “The Welcome Wagon”  that some neighborhoods also used in addition to personal welcomes as described.

Recently while participating in a Twitter Chat by chance the very drastic shift in our daily lives jumped out to me.

There is hardly any children playing outside, neighbors sitting on their porches or neighbors ringing doorbell delivering welcome gifts.

Plentiful is the “Virtual Communities” that have no doors with knockers or doorbells, just keyboards that with one keystroke can “Like” or “Obliterate” the lives of anyone or everyone in a particular virtual community.

We now have Emojis to express our feelings including, cakes, hearts, and flowers!

The problem with emoji is that you cannot smell, taste or feel them and share those sensory experiences with another living being.

Virtual communities are growing in leaps and bounds, but people are feeling lonelier than ever.

Depression is at an all time high and selfies abound!  What is this compulsion to photograph one’s self every breathing moment implying that life is one big party??

All the non-stop social sharing masquerades as communication. It is not social sharing if there is not any exchange or reciprocation.

After I participated in a random twitter chat it was pointed out to me that so many feel left out, not heard and not even greeted with a proper hello.  The gratitude for taking the time to take part in a chat or give to the community by attending is scarce and more times than not, reserved for the social stars that bring numbers to the game.

This ignited my thoughts about how many people have taken their time deciding to become part of “My Virtual Community.”  Have I greeted all with a “Hello” and “Thanked” them for hitting that Follow button or “Liking” my Tweets, FB Posts, Pinterest Pins or Instagram Images?

This Post is for all those I have missed out on saying a proper “Hello” greeting and “Thanking” you for deciding to become a member of my community!!

I would love to be able to stop by for a cup of tea or if it is five o’clock somewhere a glass of wine!

I would like to bring over a cake, freshly baked bread or a bunch flowers and tell you that you matter and you are not just a number acquired for social media statistics.

Call to Action for My Community:

I would like to influence my community to participate on social media by sharing, exchanging and reciprocating with me and their own micro-communities.

I invite you to drop me an email:  ksdpinterest@gmail.com  Say Hello, a few words to connect or hit me with a tweet @KatieSheaDesign,  Friend Request me on FaceBook, Leave me a comment on Instagram , Say Hi on Pinterest or leave me a comment below!

I will respond as soon as I can.

Virtual Communities can launch off-line communities where people’s presence and participation make a difference.

Social Media is just the cocktail party leading to the main event! ~ KSD

CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET Collection Inspired By The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Movie

I was so excited to be invited to the NYC Premiere of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel at the Ziegfeld Theater.

Trailer for The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Movie

Besides having the opportunity to attend, I was eagerly anticipating viewing the movie to see how this month’s line of CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET was inspired.

CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET is a whole new way to shop the world. Their merchants search the world for rare, handmade finds and offer them up in small quantities for a limited time. If enough people pre-order an item, it will be made and shipped. These items can’t be found in World Market’s retail stores and are exclusive to the CRAFT collection.

World Market sourced the following pieces from artisans in India.  These pieces are one-of-a-kind items designed specifically for CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET and inspired from The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in theaters March 6th, 2015.

DAYITA STATEMENT EARRINGS CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET

DAYITA STATEMENT EARRINGS

Jewelry plays an important role in Indian bridal dress customs. Every state and culture have a particular way of adorning the body and clothes with jewelry. Styles vary from state to state, as can be seen in the film The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.  Pay attention to all the jewelry flowing at the wedding of Sonny (Dev Patel) and lovely Sunaina (Tina Desai).

MEDALLION WOOL SCARF CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET

MEDALLION WOOL SCARF

The widowed Evelyn (Judi Dench) took up a new occupation as a textile buyer for an overseas company while residing at The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Evelyn learned how the Artisans start each scarf by hand-spinning wool, then weaving, dyeing and embroidering completely by hand to create an accessory that reflects the vibrant design culture of India.

SUNA SARI TOTE BAG CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET

SUNA SARI TOTE BAG

The wedding of Sonny (Dev Patel) and lovely Sunaina (Tina Desai) was rich in Indian fabrics, jewelry, and age-old customs.

The weddings in India are vibrant, colorful affairs, as depicted in the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.  Brides wear colorful, embroidered saris on their wedding day, and each of Craft World Market’s one-of-a-kind, hand-made Suni Sari Bags are created from recycled saris and clothing worn by women in India.

NILA BONE INLAY TRAY CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET

NILA BONE INLAY TRAY

Since the late 16th century, floral frames and foliage have been popular in Indian architecture and textile design. Representing abundance, and a tribute to the natural world, CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET’S Nila Bone Inlay Tray has a foliage motif that gives the decor piece a lively fluidity.

While living in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel all the characters find themselves coming alive in the most unexpected ways.

MARBLE LOTUS BOWL CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET

MARBLE LOTUS BOWL

The lotus blooms above muddy water and produces a beautiful, layered flower. Buddhists believe that the lotus flower’s rise above the murky waters symbolizes our own journey towards self-purification and enlightenment.

The characters in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel  are all on specific journeys that bring them through and to places they did not even dream of.

MANGO WOOD SIDE TABLE CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET

MANGO WOOD SIDE TABLE

This limited-edition piece is embellished with designs inspired by the traditional architectural motifs found in homes throughout Rajasthan, India, a region renowned for its royal crafts.  There are so many beautiful pieces featured in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

This hand carved mango wood table was inspired by the traditional Indian furniture found in the inn that inspired the set design of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

BRASS ELEPHANT OBJET CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET

BRASS ELEPHANT OBJET

Long believed to be symbols of divinity and compassion, elephants occupy a gargantuan place in Indian culture. Communities throughout the Indian subcontinent often anoint these benevolent beings with special oils and decorate their bodies with specific pigments as devotional acts.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel  reflects the Indian culture of: “There’s no welcome like an Indian welcome” ~ The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Quote

HAND CARVED BLUE SHELF CRAFT BY WORD MARKET

HAND CARVED BLUE SHELF

Throughout The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, the vibe: open and free is created by the open architectural design of the hotel itself.

Many of the homes and buildings in Rajasthan are left open and free for curious eyes to take in their unmistakable beauty. Here, you’ll see pieces like CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET ‘s Carved Blue Shelf adorning homes and businesses in appreciation of the carved pillars created by artisans throughout the centuries.

MANGO WOOD BENCH CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET

MANGO WOOD BENCH

The inn chosen to represent the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a rural palace situated in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, a region celebrated throughout the world for its arts and crafts. The building dates from the early 17th Century and is filled with historic furniture that celebrates the global influence of its many rulers.

CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET was attracted to this welcoming bench because of its style, inspired by the gathering place of the characters in the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Its wide seat provides a pretty place to perch while watching the sunset from your own oasis.  You can spy Muriel (Maggie Smith) resting on the welcoming bench in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Here’s how it works:

  • If you see an item you’d like to buy, click “pre-order”. You’ll enter your credit card information but won’t be charged unless the item meets the pre-order requirement for production.
  • You’ll be sent an email confirmation for your pre-order.
  • Your order will be confirmed when enough people have pre-ordered the item.
  • When your item is shipped, your credit card will be charged.
  • When your item is on its way to you, we’ll send you a final email.

If the number of pre-orders isn’t met within the time frame (typically 30 days), the design will not be created. Your pre-order will be canceled and your credit card will not be charged.

New selections appear every month, so be sure to check back to see the latest limited-edition handcrafted selections from around the world.

Here’s a link to a video to help you understand the program. http://www.worldmarket.com/craft/about/

I love that this CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET Program exposes and brings to market so many artisans from around the world.

The opportunities for the artisan, World Market, and World Market’s customers are unlimited.

Present day technology has afforded these opportunities as well with so many of the world’s population connected online.

I will be glued each month to World Market’s CRAFT BY WORLD MARKET Program to shop new and exciting one-of-a-kind products only offered by World Market!

Plot Summary

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the expansionist dream of Sonny (Dev Patel), and it’s making more claims on his time than he has available, considering his imminent marriage to the love of his life, Sunaina (Tina Desai). Sonny has his eye on a promising property now that his first venture, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, has only a single remaining vacancy – posing a rooming predicament for fresh arrivals Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig). Evelyn and Douglas (Judi Dench and Bill Nighy) have now joined the Jaipur workforce, and are wondering where their regular dates for Chilla pancakes will lead, while Norman and Carol (Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle) are negotiating the tricky waters of an exclusive relationship, as Madge (Celia Imrie) juggles two eligible and very wealthy suitors. Perhaps the only one who may know the answers is newly installed co-manager of the hotel, Muriel (Maggie Smith), the keeper of everyone’s secrets. Color Choices That Choose.

What Color Choices Can Say About You?

My husband and I have been traveling so much this year that we always have a travel go bag ready for a moment’s notice.

While reviewing our go bag for our current trip I decided to update a few things including our travel toothbrushes.  I ran through the store a few hours before our departure and indiscriminately grabbed a few travel toothbrushes and packed them away.

While preparing for bed I let my husband know that we had new toothbrushes in our toiletries bag since he is a creature of habit and would look for the same toothbrush that has been available on the last several trips.

How cute I thought when I entered the bathroom to get ready for bed.  He had his little toothbrush standing in a glass so proudly.  I grabbed the other new one out of the bag to discover that I was left with the clear, colorless toothbrush and he had chosen the blue one or did he?

I found this quite interesting since I had not verbally indicated any specific color choice for him and realized that to him the blue one was intended for him and the clear, colorless, unisex implied lack of color one was for me.

I came out laughing and remarking that he was color programmed.  He did not have the slightest clue what I was referring to.  I explained that I had hurriedly grabbed those toothbrushes at the store without even acknowledging the toothbrush colors myself (so I thought).

He look bewildered and then I turned the tables again and told him that he could respond to my observation with his own observation that I unconsciously made a delineating purchase grabbing two different colors and one of them being blue.

My husband’s simple response “So what your saying is that you bought the blue toothbrush for me” and I said yes, but it was not intentionally conscious that I made color choices based on gender until just now!!

Why does this little color observation even matter?

We make choices every day and some are authentically from our hearts.   Other choices are made because we think we are expected to as my husband thought the blue toothbrush was for him.  Blue is an unconscious male specific color so we have been programmed to think.

Growing up with an older sister and a little brother we all had our preferred Charms lollipops “color/flavor choices”.  Orange was my older sister’s; purple was mine and red was my little brother’s.  Our grandparents, aunts and uncles made purchases for us based on those colors as I reflect on the colors of our holiday outfits and accessories.

Did we really like those colors or did we make a snap color choice that ended up defining other choices for us going forward from our lollipops to our clothing and even my purple maid of honor gown for my sister’s wedding that she chose for me.

What I learned from that blue toothbrush is that we run through the days and years making choices that can potentially influence other’s choices besides ones we either make for ourselves or are made for us.

I want to be very intentional about my choices going forward making sure my choices have not been preset or subliminally suggested but are truly authentically my own.
