Cousins Reunion!

Our cousin’s reunion took place this past weekend in North West New Jersey.  Our cousins Mary Catherine and husband Bob were our hosts.

We all knew we needed to bring our appetites because Mary Catherine had been cooking and baking all week posting all her creations on Instagram and Facebook.  She is a culinary pied piper in our family.

Mary Catherine has a deep love for keeping old Italian family recipes and traditions alive, as well as starting new cherished ones. She loves creating meals that are  simple and delicious while bringing family and friends together to her table.

Creating a welcoming atmosphere is another gift Mary Catherine possesses.  We used to call her our Martha Stewart but we now believe she has far surpassed Martha.  We all have encouraged her to finish writing her cookbook and share with the world her fine taste and hospitality.

How food is experienced has everything to do with the decor, with the rituals surrounding the meal, with the company, and with the experience.  Food is drama, the table the stage, and the cook is the tamer and hero.

When we finally settled down to the table the conversations were all over the map literally! We come from all walks of life and continents.  Lots of laughing, story telling and catching up.

Choosing a Mother-Son Dance Song

Featured

motoz-speaker-mod-by-kathleen-decosmo-katiesheadesign-vzwbuzz-ad

Choosing a Mother-Son Dance Song has been a long process for me.

I did not realize that the process of choosing a special song to dance to with my son on his wedding day was going to conjure up so many memories of our mother/son lifelong journey.

He is our oldest son and the second one of our children to be wed.  The process of a son planning a wedding vs a daughter is a completely different experience.

I never knew how much time I would be putting into choosing a special song until I started listening with a very intentional ear to many Mother-Son Dance Song lists.

The whole process became very emotional for me as I sat listening to each song trying to pair the song’s lyrics somehow with my son, and our mother/son relationship all through the years.

Our relationship began during the nine months carrying him in my womb.  We connected in a very special way in addition to actually being attached umbilically during my pregnancy LOL!

My first look at my son was me seeing a scowl on his face.  I would soon learn that scowl was when his comfort was disturbed otherwise he always wore a smile.

He smiled so much that his football coach had to tell him not to smile while he was tackling someone on the football field!  Both Memories are so carved out in my long term memory.

Certain words in many of the songs provoked some deeply buried, cherished memories to resurface while clutching a box of tissues. I am wondering how many mothers of the groom have experienced this flood of emotion as I have.

I had many song sessions that brought me down memory lane and each time I narrowed my selections more and more.

I had a song chosen months ago but somehow I did not feel it was perfect for my son and myself  to dance to.  Back to square one using a fresh ear revisiting some of the sites I used already.  I thought I was past the emotional responses the music invoked in me. Nope, not only did I cry like a baby, but so did my husband when I had him listen to my new and final selection for my Mother-Son Dance Song.

My husband and I have prayed all of his life for him to find someone to share his life with.  I know that he is counting the days to marry his best friend!!

What song did I choose for our Mother-Son Dance?

November 5th, 2016 is the wedding so stay tuned!

These are some of the sites I used to review potential song selections for our Mother-Son Dance:

I used my Verizon MotoZ smartphone with the JBL SoundBoost Speaker Mod to hear each song very clearly whenever and wherever I had some downtime.  What is great about my MotoZ smartphone and the JBL SoundBoost Speaker Mod is I am able to access instantly a powerful stereo sound and it’s features of a kickstand, a built-in battery for 10 hours of playtime and speakerphone capabilities.

Happy Anniversary With MotoZ Moto Mods

A few weeks ago I became a grateful recipient of the new MotoZ Droid Smartphone with three amazing Moto Mod accessories and a storage case!

Most intriguing to me was the idea of having a projector in my pocket that could project videos and photos up to 70 inches wide onto any flat surface! The concept of having the capacity at a moment’s notice to present a project, idea, document, image, video or view a movie with one or more people was exploding my mind!

I wanted to use the projector for something very special.  I decided to produce a 33rd wedding anniversary video for my husband.

While editing my anniversary video I used the JBL Soundbooth Speaker to play the video through for a preview before surprising my husband.

I played the video on our bedroom ceiling for our 33rd Wedding Anniversary with my Moto Insta-Share Moto Mod projector.

Preparing all the images for this very special video spent lots of battery time. Editing images for hours really tested the MotoZ’s Moto Mod Power Pack Battery life. I went for almost a whole day without having to charge up my smartphone.

I have more creative ideas to use my MotoZ’s Moto Mods in my work and my everyday life.  Stay Tuned!!!

Spring Awakening Performed At The 70th Annual Tony Awards

Spring Awakening Performed at the 70th Annual Tony Awards!

Congratulations to the Spring Awakening cast for a mind-blowing performance at the 70th Annual Tony Awards!

Spring Awakening via Hollywood Life at Tony Awards

The cast of the revival of Spring Awakening performed at the 70th Annual Tony Awards after 1,769 backers pledged $211,634 on Kickstarter to help bring the cast to the Tony stage.

Spring Awakening was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical.  The money raised on Kickstarter was needed to cover travel expenses for the actors, time spent in rehearsal, and all of the pieces of the set and design that are currently in storage in preparation for the 2017 national tour.

My family was particularly excited for the Tony Awards not because it was the 70th Tony Awards, but because Alex Boniello, the voice of Moritz would be Live and OnStage for all eyes to view!

Alex, in an interview this past fall  shared that “he had been on 727 auditions in 6 years.”

“How did you get your start and what is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your career?

I got my start during college. I attended Wagner College on Staten Island. They have a great theatre department and I was working towards that degree. The entire time I was in school, I was working with my agent and manager on auditions. I would literally run from classes to the Staten Island Ferry, go in for auditions and then get back on the ferry just in time for my next class. It was completely insane.

Throughout school, I had worked on a few TV shows and films, but the first really great job for me was the national tour of Green Day’s American Idiot right after I graduated. That job started my relationship with Michael Mayer (ironically the director of the first production of Spring Awakening). After that, Michael hired me for three more jobs, all of which lead directly to this.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to definitely make sure you have an active Twitter account. Without that, Andy Mientus will never give you a job via direct message (haha)! No, but actually, I think the most important lesson is to be proud of the work you do and never give up. I know that’s cheesy, but it really is true. I save all of the e-mails of every audition I’ve ever gone on. I have been on 727 auditions in the last 6 years. The fact that my Broadway debut is coming entirely from word of mouth just goes to show that even if you don’t get the jobs when you’re auditioning for them, you’re doing SOMETHING positive and important for your future just by showing up and getting one percent better each time.” Read More of the Interview Here

Needless to say,  when my husband and I along with the Boniellos attended Spring Awakening we were in awe of all the talent on the Brooks Atkinson Theatre Stage.

My family and our whole community are so proud of Alex for all of his hard work and accomplishments in his acting career.

We have the entire 70th Tony Awards, recorded on our DVR.  Our Verizon FiOS Quantum TV Service has plenty of recording storage room to spare since we have 200 hours of HD programming or up to 1,000 hours of standard-definition programming available and supports up to 10 TVs!

A Life Changing Decision

Yes No Maybe Decisions By Katie Shea Design #SwitchersRemorse

When I was three and a half years I would pray every night that I could go to school with my big sister who had just started kindergarten. I was sad that I could not go with her.  We always did everything together so I could not understand why I could not just go and sit next to her in class.

I cried every day when we dropped her off to school and I told my mother that I was going to school with my sister the very next fall.  In the early 1960’s there was not any pre-k or nursery schools that she could have signed me up for to quench my thirst to go to school.

My mother started teaching me kindergarten at home to prepare me for her very bold move of registering me when I was four years old to kindergarten in the school my sister was attending.

The day my mother marched me up to the school for registration was a life changing decision. I got a glimpse of a strong-minded mother trying hard to meet her relentless four-year old’s educational hunger.  She was determined to get me into school and finally made a deal with the principal.  I had to do well in the first two months or she would have to take me out of kindergarten and start me again in the following September.

Fast forward thirteen years later.  I started my college career in community college at 17 years old and became a store manager for Waldenbooks at 18 years old.  I was working a full-time job and going to school to earn enough money to transfer to a four-year college.

I put in my applications for various four-year colleges just to see where I stood for the following school year.  To my surprise, I was accepted to all of them and I would not be able to commute but have to pay for a dorm in addition to my tuition.

I really had the bug to go away to college and immerse myself in my education, but how was I going to afford it I asked myself.  I prayed for answers.  Between my own savings and if I took out an educational loan I would be able to make it I concluded.

I quickly applied for a federal loan and it was issued rather quickly.  I accepted at a college that was about an hour away from my home.  I was a little late to the party (since I was a transfer student) applying for student housing but was told that something would open up for me.

While all these fast pace decisions were being made I kept pushing back this gnawing feeling of uneasiness and discomfort.  I decided to ignore what I now know as “intuition” and kept on course to move to my new college.

It was two days until the semester was going to begin, and I still had not been able to acquire a place to live.  I even considered commuting, but my parents pointed out that my ride would be a rough one through very deserted areas.  My car or so I say my “jalopy” would not be able to sustain a consistent, long distance commute.

I am not a quitter and never had quit anything in my life.  I had no other choice but to not attend that semester considering all the circumstances.  I had regretted all the time and energy that decision had taken out of me just to end up not attending anyway. I had made a life changing decision unbeknownst to me.

Now, what was I going to do about that student loan check ready to get deposited into my bank account???   I walked into the bank and handed them back the check.  They were extremely confused and thrown off kilter.  I was told that nobody had ever returned a student loan check to them and they really didn’t know what to do with it!  Well I guess they figured it out.

Less than a year later I had moved to NYC working as a Store Manager for the Gap Stores and met the person I have been married to for almost 32 years.

What I learned is that my ability to press on is great, but it does not mean I cannot change my decisions.  Changing my decisions for good reasons is not quitting.

Returning the student loan was one of the hardest things I had to do at that time of my life but it definitely set me sailing towards my future.  A wonderful husband, three beautiful children and a life that has been more than I could ever wish for!
