Must Have FiOS Quantum TV Downton Abbey Fans!

George Clooney to Guest-Star In a Downton Abbey Christmas Sketch

“What does this mean for us exactly? The actor, regrettably, will not pop up on a future episode of Downton Abbey as a legit character, like Lord Clooningham, a dashing love interest whose parlor tricks endear him to everyone in the household except the ever-suspecting Dowager.

Instead, he will appear during a one-off Downton-set sketch that we stateside viewers will have to view secondhand on YouTube.”  more:

I am a little disappointed that George, as reported will not be a legit character on Downton Abbey but……

I am so excited that I have FiOS Quantum TV so I can record the full series of Downton Abbey as well as some of my other favorite TV series this fall!

YES I said the FULL Series!  How can I do that without filling up the DVR??

9-11-2014 10-49-57 AM

MORE STORAGE

Store up to 200 hours of HD content.* Save full seasons of the series you love.

 MORE ENTERTAINMENT

Record up to 12 shows at the same time.* Forget about waiting for reruns and fighting over the remote. With FiOS Quantum TV, you’ll never miss the shows you love.

Why would we EVER need to have the capability to record up to 12 shows at the same time??

We all have our favorite shows and add in specials that come up… those shows can add up rather quickly.  Compound all the sporting events (we do not all share the same teas in our house) our DVR is action packed!

 MORE CONTROL

You can pause, play and rewind live action on any TV in your house with a set-top box.** Not just the ones connected to a DVR. You can even move from one room, grab a snack and pick your show up in another.

The capability to rewind “live action” for me is so helpful especially while watching a cooking show that I might be following along with a recipe.

 PLUS, WATCH LIVE TV ANYTIME

Use the Verizon FiOS Mobile App† to access live TV and On Demand movies almost anywhere on any compatible device.

We are a family that travels and it is very comforting to retire to our hotel room and know we can still watch our favorite shows from wherever we might be resting our head those nights away from our home.

We upgraded this summer and are getting so much use out of all these features.

What TV shows or special series do you want to record to view/ binge using all the features FiOS Quantum TV has to offer?

I would love to hear what your Favorite TV Series are or about the new ones coming this fall.

I invite you to share your favorites or leave any FiOS Quantum TV questions in the comments.

**I am a member of #LifeOnFiOS – a selected team of influencers for Verizon who love the FiOS service. No compensation was provided and opinions are, as always my own.

Happy 350th Birthday NYC by Katie Shea Design #VZWBuzz

September 8th, 2014 is the 350th anniversary of the surrender of Dutch New Amsterdam to the British and the settlement’s renaming as New York. read more..

Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant surrendered New Amsterdam, the capital of New Netherland, to an English naval squadron under Colonel Richard Nicolls. Stuyvesant had hoped to resist the English, but he was an unpopular ruler, and his Dutch subjects refused to rally around him. Following its capture, New Amsterdam’s name was changed to New York, in honor of the Duke of York, who organized the mission. read more….

How Did the Boroughs Get Their Names?

In 1609 Robert Guet called the island “Mannahata,” after Native American names for the area. Henry Hudson referred to Staten Eylandt after the States General—Netherlands’ governing body. The Bronx is named after Jonas Bronck, who settled in the area in 1639. Brooklyn refers to Breukelen, the Dutch village in the Netherlands. Queens was named after Queen Catherine of Braganza, wife of King Charles II of England (1630-1685).

How Did New York Get The Nickname “The Big Apple”?

The Big Apple was first popularized as a reference to New York City by John J. Fitz Gerald in a number of New York Morning Telegrapharticles in the 1920s in reference to New York horse-racing. The earliest of these was a casual reference on May 3, 1921:

  1. P. Smith, with Tippity Witchet and others of the L. T. Bauer string, is scheduled to start for “the big apple” to-morrow after a most prosperous Spring campaign at Bowie and Havre de Grace.[10]

Fitz Gerald referred to the “big apple” frequently thereafter.[11] He explained his use in a February 18, 1924, column under the headline “Around the Big Apple”:

The Big Apple. The dream of every lad that ever threw a leg over a thoroughbred and the goal of all horsemen. There’s only one Big Apple. That’s New York.

Two dusky stable hands were leading a pair of thoroughbred around the “cooling rings” of adjoining stables at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans and engaging in desultory conversation.

“Where y’all goin’ from here?” queried one.

“From here we’re headin’ for The Big Apple,” proudly replied the other.

“Well, you’d better fatten up them skinners or all you’ll get from the apple will be the core,” was the quick rejoinder.

The term “big apple” was used by Frank Sinatra speaking to opera singer Dorothy Kirsten (who was his co-star in the late 1940s-early 1950s NBC radio program “Light Up Time” on a show that aired on 03/28/1950 at about the 2:30 mark. The show may be heard here.

Frank Sinatra also contributed to New York’s notoriety when he recorded the famous song New York, New York.

Theme from New York, New York” (or “New York, New York“) is the theme song from the Martin Scorsese film New York, New York(1977), composed by John Kander, with lyrics by Fred Ebb. It was written for and performed in the film by Liza Minnelli. It remains one of the best-remembered songs about New York City.

In 1979, it was recorded by Frank Sinatra, for his album Trilogy: Past Present Future (1980), and has since become closely associated with him. He occasionally performed it live with Minnelli as a duet. Sinatra recorded it a second time in duet with Tony Bennett for his 1993 album Duets.

 New York, New York

Start spreading the news

I am leaving today

I want to be a part of it

New York, New York

These vagabond shoes

Are longing to stray

Right through the very heart of it

New York, New York

I wanna wake up in a city

That doesn’t sleep

And find I’m king of the hill

Top of the heap

These little town blues

Are melting away

I’ll make a brand new start of it

In old New York

If I can make it there

I’ll make it anywhere

It’s up to you

New York, New York

New York, New York

I want to wake up

in a city that never sleeps

And find I’m a number one, top of the list

King of the hill

A number one

These little town blues

Oh they’re melting away

I’m gonna make a brand new start of it

In old New York

And If I can make it there

I’m gonna make it anywhere

It’s up to you

New York, New York, New York

The New York Landscape has certainly changed in the last 350 years but the sentiment has always stayed the same:

I’m gonna make it anywhere

It’s up to you

What Will Be On Your Coffee Table?? Ikea Catalog 2015

Featured

IKEA announced on July 16th, 2014 that the new 2015 IKEA U.S. catalog, filled with design inspiration and new products for every area of the home, will be available to the public starting this August. Themed Where the Everyday Begins and Ends, this years catalog highlights the two important rooms where people sleep and get ready every morning and night the bedroom and the bathroom. Readers will learn how IKEA can help them make the beginning and end of their days more comfortable, more calm and more organized by designing their spaces based on their own routines, utilizing smart space solutions, and expressing their personal styles.

After more than 50 years in the furniture business, Ikea decided to perform its very first global company survey. The goal of the survey was to “[dig] into how the world wakes up by tuning in to eight different metropoles in eight different countries [to investigate] the morning routines, habits and wishes of those who live there.” Ikea then used the study’s findings—sourced from residents of Berlin, London, Moscow, Mumbai, New York, Paris, Shanghai and Stockholm—to inform the creations of several new products in its 2015 collection. contd..

Last week I attended the launch of Ikea’s 2015 Catalog in NYC.  Local influencers were invited to a slumber party themed event at a pop up space in lower Manhattan. The space was styled with bedroom products such as bedding, closet and wardrobe pieces along with vanity displays.

Talking points:

“The bedroom is not just for sleep.  There is a family bed where movie nights are viewed and everyone has a spot to sit.  A private room for the family.”

Urbanization:

Do not worry about the size of your living space because outside is your living room.

By 2050, 86% of developed countries will be living in urban areas.  A world that exists outside of our four walls.

 Sustainability:

A rise in “Small Space” living in the US  in order to have a world that exists outside of our four walls and has nothing to do with an economic decline.

Becky’s Inspiration: materials, visual texture and tactile.

Do not be afraid of color, be afraid of beige (humor).

Families are learning to live together again in their space.

The color that sells is beige.  It is a delicate balancing act of bringing in color.  Different pieces with color really have different places in Ikea.

 Materiality:

The lowest price point products are the hardest to design, finding materials, suppliers and stackability is what goes into Ikea’s equation to arrive at the best product and price point.

Ikea is celebrated as an accessible brand.

“Respect to the range”.

Ikea speaks to their customers through their room settings in their stores.

Millennials are breaking all the rules, teaching us what life will be going forward.  They are not quite as interested as having a home for 30 years, a job for 30 years and they really see the World as their opportunity.

What millennials own is temporary.  “The 2015 collection is inspired by millennials”.

Baby Boomers/ Flat Age Society are refusing to age the same way their parents did.  They are living, working and staying young longer.  A lot like the millennials.  Choosing to downsize, living in small spaces and are not as afraid as their parents were about what is coming in the next 3-5 years.

What separates millennials from the Flat Age? Flat Age wants luxury and comfort, where as millennials are fine with not worrying about luxury.

Ikea can provide comfort and luxury with their products for the Baby Boomers/Flat Age Society as well.

Baby Boomers/Flat Age Society is motivating Becky, Ikea’s designer .

What keeps Becky up at night:

How can Becky convince the Baby Boomers/Flat Age Society what Ikea has to offer will last the Boomers for  10, 15 and 25 years if they want it to.  Also, how can Becky can convince the millennials that Ikea has something that is not just  beige..

Ikea does not have a specific generational segment they cater to.

Ikea tries to reach all the generations.

The 2015 catalog will be available in 67 printed editions, 32 languages and 46 countries/territories. The IKEA catalog is now the largest print production ever to be printed on 100% FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper. The entire IKEA catalog production chain, from forest to printer, is FSC-certified to ensure a more sustainable origin of the wood.

U.S. consumers can access the new catalog in multiple ways:

  •    Digital Version Visit http://www.2015digitalcatalog.com to view the digital version of the catalog online beginning on July 24. New for this year, user will also be able to save lists of their favorite products from the digital catalog and create shopping lists.

About Interior Designer Rebecca (Becky) LaFranchi:

Her career trajectory: Becky is a self-made interior designer coming from a humble background.  She started as a child, creating room layouts on graph paper and “buying” products from the Sears or Penny’s catalog to place in her imagined rooms. Later in life, while waiting tables, she decided to get a degree in Interior Design.  This eventually brought her to IKEA Seattle where she managed that stores’ team then was recognized for her talent and landed the biggest job of all as responsible for all stores.

* Her role at IKEA: She is responsible for the visual look and feel of all 38 IKEA stores.  She leads a team of over 500 co-workers comprised of Interior Designers, Visual Merchandisers, Graphic Designers and Carpenters. She is passionate about product and interior design at IKEA.

Carmine’s: Talking 42 Ounce Porterhouse Steak, Ragu, Wings, NYC, Vegas with Executive Chef Glenn Rolnick

Featured

Carmine’s is a family style restaurant offering exceptional value to its guests through the many dishes of Southern Italian cuisine. Restaurateur Artie Cutler crafted the Carmine’s concept with a singular vision; bringing his guests “wow-factor” sized portions and making any meal feel like an Italian American wedding feast. Platters of homestyle antipasto, pasta, decadent seafood or meat entrees, and of course homemade desserts are all staples at Carmine’s, meant for sharing amongst friends and family. When great food and wine are supported by friendly and knowledgeable service, the results are magic - “we want every day to feel like a Sunday afternoon at Grandma’s!”

A Special Edition of The Food & Booze Show was broadcast live from Carmine’s NYC with special on site guests Kathleen DeCosmo and Susan Serra on the ground chatting with Executive Chef Glenn Rolnick.

GLENN ROLNICK is the Director of Culinary Operations of Alicart Restaurant Group, a position he’s held for ten years. He has appeared on Good Morning America and QVC and has written for Time, New York Times, Gourmet, The New Yorker and Food Arts.

While we were preparing our tastebuds for the onslaught of Carmine’s heaven, we were schooled in Carmine’s history by Executive Chef and Author Glenn Rolnick.

25 years open soon for NYC’s 91st location!
20 years at Carmine’s Times Square (1.24 million customers yearly).

Carmine’s locations are Tropicana Hotel and Casino, Atlantic City, NJ, Times Square NYC, Upper West Side 91st NYC, Atlantis Resort, Bahamas, Washington DC and The Forum Shops at Caesars Las Vegas.

The Washington DC location has 25,000 sq feet, 9 private dining rooms, 700 seats, and a secret service entrance.

Las Vegas location has 28000 sq feet 750 seats, 6 private dining space including a private balcony over looking the strip.

1 year for Las Vegas and listed in Top Ten Restaurant Vegas- USA Today : 10 BEST HOMESTYLE IN LAS VEGAS, NV.

The 28,000-square-foot restaurant, designed by Bill Johnson of Johnson Studios, features the trademark touches that grace all Carmine’s locations – high ceilings, antique chandeliers and warm, homey colors. Walls are lined with black and white photographs depicting the Southern Italian families whose culinary traditions inspired the restaurant’s timeless menu. There are 75 Chandeliers, 6 portraits and 7500 pictures in Carmine’s Las Vegas.

Trivia for Carmine’s Las Vegas First Year:

2400 people ate gluten free pasta
69,994 actual meatballs 125,000 meats
1,200 titanics or 12,000 softball scoops ice cream
14,869 lbs garlic
9,915 chicken parm
121,099 little neck clams
22,654 lbs. romano cheese
25,362 gal of marinara sauce
80,000 whole lemons
28,000 chicken breast
4,200 fresh basil
7,400 fried calamari or 15,000 pounds

We were treated to several dishes on the menu that were familiar to me as a regular guest and a few that I have never tasted before.

Did you know these dishes are menu choices at Carmine’s?

Carmine’s Celebrates
Classic Italian Recipes for Everyday Feasts

Following their successful Carmine’s Family-Style Cookbook, Carmine’s Celebrates is perfect for big, abundant family-and-friend gatherings: weekly feasts, Sunday dinners, and holiday celebrations

Carmine’s is founded on the twin concepts of deliciousness and abbondanza. In their wildly popular Times Square flagship location and their other restaurants in New York City, Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Washington, DC, and Paradise Island, Bahamas, the tables are filled with giant platters of pasta, steaks, chicken, vegetables and more. And every single diner has a smile on his face. Now that concept comes home from the masters. Italian food is the nation’s most popular food both in restaurants and in home kitchens. In Carmine’s Celebrates, home cooks will learn how to make more than one hundred dishes in happy-making quantities. Nothing is difficult to make, serve or store. Each dish uses grocery store ingredients and extracts the best flavor from them so anyone can be an amazing cook. There is a special emphasis on “everyday” holidays, such as weekend family dinners, and also on traditional holiday food for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Dishes include:
—Crostini with Cannellini Bean Dip
—Sea Scallops Wrapped in Pancetta
—Mussels Fra Diavolo
—Spaghetti Carbonara
—Beefsteak Fiorentina
—Chicken Cacciatore

Sergeant Warren O.Ostin Paying Tribute To our Veterans and Fallen Heroes

CAMP LEJEUNE — Twenty-two hundred Marines and sailors from Camp Lejeune are preparing to deploy off the coast of Libya in northern Africa. They said goodbye to their families Monday afternoon, and they’ll be leaving in the days ahead.

“There’s always in the back of your mind what if, what could happen,” Marine wife Carrie Cochran said.  Continue Reading…

March 2011 this image flashed across the TV of our Nephew Warren O. Ostin preparing to be deployed.  Our hearts sank with sorrow and swelled with pride all at the same time.

Warren O Ostin Deploying

Our nephew called me himself to tell me that he was going to be deployed overseas earlier than expected.  I held back my overwhelming tears as he filled me in on what he could, all the while reassuring me that all would be all right and that he was ready.

I got off the phone, cried my eyes out and begged God to protect him and bring him back to us.  My nephew is also my God Child and with that I wanted to make sure he felt connected always.

My Dad, an army veteran himself had given me a necklace several years before he passed away.  The necklace was a pair of praying hands with the Serenity Prayer inscribed on the back.

I decided to give this necklace to my nephew to have with him while he served his deployments. I made him promise he would bring it back to me when he was all done serving our country.  Along with the necklace I made a specific time of the day that I would be praying for him EST.  I wanted him to feel connected no matter where in the world he was always.

Warren O Ostin Afghanistan

Our nephew finished serving our country full time and is now a Sergeant in the US Marine Reserves.

I never asked him about the necklace or if he had it with him while deployed.

One day after he was home for good I received a phone call from Warren.  He asked me if I had seen his latest Facebook image.

He explained that he had carried the Praying Hands necklace with him the entire time he was in the Marines.  He went on to say that he wanted to have the Praying Hands with him always so he had them tattooed to his chest forever.

Praying Hands

I was speechless and engulfed with emotion.  Having two sons has taught me that men use actions and few words to express their emotions.  My nephew Warren is forever wearing his expression of gratitude to God and his country for returning home to us!

This Memorial Day I sat behind my nephew thanking God for the opportunity to share a day with him in person.  Enjoying watching him watch the game, never forgetting that I was not sure I would ever have this opportunity to see him smile or hear him laugh.

Sargeant Warren O. Ostin at Citizens Bank Field Philadelphia watching Game

I sat back in my seat praying for all who have lost a loved one in service to our country.  Counting our blessings for our nephew and all that have and continue to put themselves at risk for the United States.

My Memorial Day Thanksgiving Toast Cheers

This year I raised my glass in a Memorial Day, Thanksgiving toast to my nephew and his safe return home.

Thank You Sergeant Warren O. Ostin for your Service to this country!

Happy Mother’s Day: A Musical Tribute

Featured

Happy Mother's Day by Visual Poetics CURATED by Katie Shea Design

Raised by a single mother, Kevin Durant is the NBA’s 2013-14 Most Valuable Player.

Kevin Durant’s powerful, emotional MVP acceptance speech went viral impacting the hearts of so many.

Kevin recounted that he fell in love with basketball in the second grade.

Kevin shared his memory of the little family’s first apartment. “No bed, no furniture.  We sat in the living room and hugged.  We felt like we made it!”

This video very personally touched my heart as well as this recently released single “Happy Mother’s Day” by Visual Poetics:

Happy Mother's Day by Visual Poetics

It is truly poetic that this “Happy Mother’s Day” single was released just a few days before Kevin Durant’s beautiful tribute to his single mother.

Kevin’s tribute to his mom depicts exactly what this Mother’s Day single is expressing musically.

Kevin praised his mother, honoring her and all that she did for him and his brother:

“YOU made us believe,

kept us off the street,

put clothes on our back

food on the table

went to sleep hungry.

You sacrificed for us

YOUR the real MVP

Symbolic image of a man who plays basketball

“Happy Mother’s Day” by Visual Poetics speaks of the single mom’s struggles, the feelings of the fatherless child and the encouragement that is felt by the strength spoken and exemplified by a single mom.

So uncannily parallel with Kevin Durant’s emotional acceptance speech to this recently released “Happy Mother’s Day” single.

Join me in congratulating Kevin Durant’s Mom Wanda Pratt in accomplishing so much as a single mother and making her son proud to call her Mom.

I want to invite you to also listen to this “Happy Mother’s Day” single by Visual Poetics:

Happy Mother's Day Sound Cloud by Visual Poetics

 Happy Mother’s Day

To every person that has been a MOM to someone!

About the Artist Visual Poetics:

VISUAL POETICS – HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY [@VISUALPOETICS]

Visual Poetics is the founding member and long time producer of the underground group known as Little Egypt. Releasing several albums and touring extensively, Little Egypt became known for combining that raw Brooklyn Hip-Hop stage energy with conscious level lyrics.

In particular, Visual Poetics’ style is that of an old school storyteller.  Weaving vivid images with complex metaphors, Vis (pronounced Viz) has been known to resurface from time to time dropping political pieces and other collaborative efforts over the past few years.

This chapter, Happy Mother’s Day, includes heavy production work from Compton’s own multitalented Trae Sevn and Khordz (of Little Egypt) combined with the smooth sounds of soulful singer/lyricist Madd Mary (look out!) for this heartfelt shout out and dedication to single parents worldwide.

Saying Goodbye with Google Hangouts

Featured

Saying Goodbye with Google Hangouts by Katie Shea Design #KatieSheaDesign

My husband and I had flown down to Florida April 2013 to spend some time with his Dad. My father in law had been battling prostate cancer for over a decade and it was getting worse.

We had noticed his accelerated deterioration over the previous months  on our Google Hangout chats.

We met online very regularly with him and his wife Laura.  We were able to spend time with him and discern that indeed the doctor’s prognosis was pretty accurate and he did not have much time left as reported.

We figured that we would be flying down frequently to visit as his disease progressed.

When we arrived we soon realized that our Dad’s health was much more further along than even the Google Hangouts had revealed.

The nurse that attended my father in law took me aside quietly and let me know that he had been earnestly awaiting his son’s arrival.  She also gave me her opinion that he was “waiting” to see his son.  I got the shivers as she communicated what I knew was very near.

My father in law’s health declined rapidly within 24 hours of that conversation.

Hospice was called in and set up bedside care around the clock.  This all happened within three days of our arrival to visit him.

We kept in constant communication with our three grown children through Google Hangouts and text messaging .

Three days passed with Hospice tending to my father in law.  Hospice decided that his passing did not seem to be imminent so they removed their care for the time being and were on standby.

My father in law became cognitive for a very small burst.  We had the Hospice music therapist come by and we all had a music jam session that seemed to brighten him up for a short bit.

My Father in law was “Music” a professional Jazz musician, educator and an author:

Emile graduated from the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. He later earned a Masters of Music Ed at New Jersey City University. Emile De Cosmo has been active as a teacher, musician, and jazz clinician for over 50 years. Playing woodwind instruments, he has freelanced in the New York area with many noted musicians on TV and radio commercial sound tracks, club dates, concerts, and shows. Formerly an Adjunct Professor of Jazz Improvisation at New Jersey City University, an Applied Music instructor at New Jersey City University and Farleigh Dickinson University, Concert/Marching /Jazz Band Director at Fort Lee High School, Artist in Residence/Teacher /Mentor for the Jersey City school district and author of 25 books on Jazz improvisation including the Polytonal Rhythm Series” Read

The jam session was his very last.  My husband picked his dad up and put him to bed that night.  His condition worsened and Hospice was called to come back and evaluate.

The very kind Hospice nurse took me aside and asked me if there was anybody that my father in law could possibly be waiting for.  I knew exactly what she meant.  I let her know that it could possibly be his grandchildren.

We had kept our children very informed of their grandfather’s condition and they were on standby ready to book flights at a moments notice.

It was very difficult to tell them exactly when to get on the plane since my father in law’s health had wavered over the time we were there.

My husband and I had prepared for the possibility that his dad could pass very quickly and that our children might not be able to arrive in time to see their grandfather in person one last time.

We had all of our children, cousins and friends connected on Google Hangouts in the event we needed to have an emergency meeting.

We gathered some family members to my in law’s home, connected with our children on Google Hangout and had family time with my father in law.

My father in law was in a semi conscious state so we brought my husband’s tablet to his bedside.  We placed the tablet right beside him as our children spoke to him loving words, entertained him wearing crazy hats and mustaches, shared anecdotes of times gone by and impersonated their grandfather which seemed to rally him to a moment of consciousness.  His mouth formed the words “I Love You” to his grandchildren.  Time stopped for all of us in the room and on Google Hangouts.  Our children all told their grandfather how much they loved him and how much he meant to them all of their lives.  They told him to rest and he will always be alive in their hearts.  They blew kisses to him as he tried so very hard to open his eyes one last time to say goodbye.

My father in law passed nine hours later ( May 3rd, 2013) peacefully surrounded by his devoted wife Laura, my husband, my sister in law and myself.

My husband and I are so grateful for the technology that enabled us to work remotely so we had the ability to stay with my father in law in his last several weeks of life.

We are very grateful for Google Hangouts that gave our children the ability to visit with their grandfather and spend time with him in his last hours of life.

What is Google Hangouts:

If you have never used Google Hangouts, it’s a very powerful messaging tool.

Hangouts lets you send messages, emoji, photos, and start video calls with your friends and family. You can start a Hangout from Gmail, Google+, your Android or iOS device, or with the Chrome extension.e.

It’s also a powerful video capturing tool.

You can turn any Hangout into a live video call with up to 10 people. Then turn that video call into a recording and make it publicly available on Google+ or your YouTube channel.

You can even share your screen with the audience if you need to demonstrate any of your products or services.

Pro tip: If you share the video on YouTube, you can download the mp4 file of the recording. This makes it easy for you to do some light editing or add open/end slates to your video.

You can then re-upload the edited video onto another YouTube channel or the same one and use that video to share with your customers.

Under Magnolia by Frances Mayes Available April 1st, 2014 Shot with a Samsung Galaxy Camera #VZWBuzz by Katie Shea Design

“I’ll always marvel at the liveliness of southern speech-so full of metaphor and hyperbole, quirks and vividness.”  ~ Frances Mayes

A few pages into “Under Magnolia” I grabbed a brand new notebook along with a light blue highlighter to keep by my side.  I found myself lingering on sentences and discovering words that I wanted to remember. Reading ever so slowly, stopping to pause, jotting down words and quotes  to come back to was my journey through “Under Magnolia.”

“Images are the pegs holding down memory’s billowing tent.” ~ Frances Mayes

Frances Mayes is a wordsmith who paints vivid images using each word like a paintbrush stroke spreading color all over her canvas. Frances shared her childhood memories with wit, humor, metaphors and hyperboles.

“Families all over have secrets and weird people and foibles, and mine did too.” ~ Frances Mayes

Getting to know Frances as a child, walking alongside her into womanhood certainly exhibited that:

“Your own will can trump how you were raised.” ~ Frances Mayes

My heart ached with sorrow for Frances especially in her fourteenth year. (You will have to read the book to find out!)

“The heart is a lonely hunter.” ~ Frances Mayes

Despite riding on a bumpy road with so many twists and turns, living through losses of great magnitude (“She is the lining of my coat I will have to shed.” ~ Frances Mayes)  she maintained her optimism.

“Everyday an air of possibility.” ~ Frances Mayes

Ever so true that statement!  Frances Mayes is the author of many books:  Bella Tuscany, Every Day in Tuscany, The Tuscan Sun Cookbook and the NY Times Best Selling novel  “Under The Tuscan Sun” that went on to be made into an  iconic movie. Social Media Week 2014 NYC “Since its inception in 2008, Social Media Week has grown from nine to 26 cities, and global expansion continues to increase. Eight cities around the world will be hosting Social Media Week events this month – everywhere from Bangalore to Lagos to Milan to Tokyo. We spoke to CEO and co-founder Toby Daniels about what’s new this year, and where the event is heading. The theme of this year’s festivities is “the future of now,” a reflection of our always-connected lifestyle. The content and programming of this year’s event will focus on the emerging trends: wearable tech and the quantified life, crowd-funding – especially with regard to architectural design and real estate, and content marketing. “Brands are recognizing that not only do they need to understand how to create and curate content, they also need to know how to do that at scale,” said Daniels. Major brands will be in attendance to showcase their own work, and the organizers are also launching the ‘Now Studio,’ which will showcase the most viral content. “It’s an opportunity for attendees to learn how to become better content creators,” he said.”  Read More..

Living in the Moment “Just Like Him”.

Featured

Living in the Moment by Katie Shea Design

“Experience this moment to its fullest.” ~Zen Proverb #quotes

Too often as parents we rush through the days, years then decades with our children and wake up one day with not children… but adults.

My husband and I decided long ago that spending time with our children was one of our top priorities always.  We have maintained that priority even into adulthood with all three of our children and our son in law as well.

There was a very popular song in the 1970’s that I know many of us Baby Boomers sang with our transistor radios, 45’s and cassette recorders. While we sang the song I am sure we did not realize what exactly we were saying as  we belted it out over and over again.

My husband, being a professional musician was very aware of the lyrics to songs as he also sang them over and over during his many gigs in the 70’s and 80’s.

So in the beginnings of our courtship we sat with our cup of coffee in hand in our third floor walk-up and discussed what our children would potentially look like, who they would take after etc..

Music was always one of the springboards of conversation for us and continues to be a very powerful voice for all generations.

While discussing our future as potential parents, my husband referenced the popular song Cat’s in the Cradle“.  He expressed his goal to me that he wanted to be the father that always had time for his children.  When they grew up they would always have time for him because he would have taught them with his actions and his words that they were and are always his priority.

The image above is my husband spending time with our 26 year old son who on that particular day invited us to come along on his photo shoot just to spend time with us as we always have done with him.  He invites us into his world and shares his life with us even as an adult living on his own.  My husband has succeeded in his goal as being the father he always wanted to be and not the father in the song “Cat’s in the Cradle

Cat’s in the Cradle is a 1974 folk rock song by Harry Chapin from the album Verities & Balderdash. The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1974. As Chapin’s only No. 1 hit song, it became the best known of his work and a staple for folk rock music.

The song is told in first-person by a father who is too busy to spend time with his son. Though the son asks him to join in childhood activities, the father always responds with little more than vague promises of spending time together in the ‘future’. While wishing to spend time with his father, the son starts to model himself on his father’s behaviour, hence the verse wishing to be “just like him.” The final two verses reverse the roles, where the father asks his grown-up son to spend time with him after his graduation, and then later come to visit, but the son responds that he is now too busy to find the time for his father. The father then reflects that they are both alike, saying “my boy was just like me.”

The Best Christmas is...

“The best Christmas of all is the presence of a happy family all wrapped up with one another.”  ~ Burton Hillis

Christmas is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. For two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.

Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. December 25–Christmas Day–has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870.

Roasted to perfection. Deep in color with a nice sheen of natural oils. This coffee offers a healthy body, strong aroma and a smooth finish. Fairway’s own delicious coffee.

Fairway Market has introduced OneCup store-brand, single-serve coffee pods.

Compatible with Keurig coffee machines, the 100% Arabic, kosher-certified coffees are available in six flavors: Organic Original Blend, Organic Decaf Blend, Organic Dark Roast, Supreme Blend, Italian Roast and Hazelnut.

The design of the pods are quite impressive.  The coffee flavor really comes through and I believe the construction of the pods have a lot to do with the full bodied flavor in my cup.

Radiant Orchid, Pantone’s Color of the Year 2014 “Everything’s Coming Up Orchid”

Pantone, an X-Rite company and the global authority, announced 12/05/13 PANTONE® 18-3224 Radiant Orchid, a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple, as the color of the year for 2014.

About the PANTONE Color of the Year

Officially known as Radiant Orchid, the tropical shade is a color-wheel contrast to green, said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, but it’s not the red that would have been a more obvious choice. “It’s a little different, it’s a little off the beaten path, and it’s not a primary color,” she explains. “It’s an invitation to innovation. The purple family offers (an) opportunity to do creative things.” Read more:

The color of the year selection requires careful consideration and, to arrive at the selection, Pantone quite literally combs the world looking for color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films that are in production, traveling art collections, hot new artists, popular travel destinations and other socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from technology, availability of new textures and effects that impact color, and even upcoming sports events that capture worldwide attention.

Manufacturers of all stripes tend to jump on the bandwagon and slap the year’s hot, new color on their products in an effort to punch up their line ups.

Keurig, for instance, plans to unveil its MINI Plus coffee maker in the color of radiant orchid in February 2014, according to spokeswoman Lizzie Manganiello.

Color Choices That Choose.

Featured

What Color Choices Can Say About You?

My husband and I have been traveling so much this year that we always have a travel go bag ready for a moment’s notice.

While reviewing our go bag for our current trip I decided to update a few things including our travel toothbrushes.  I ran through the store a few hours before our departure and indiscriminately grabbed a few travel toothbrushes and packed them away.

While preparing for bed I let my husband know that we had new toothbrushes in our toiletries bag since he is a creature of habit and would look for the same toothbrush that has been available on the last several trips.

How cute I thought when I entered the bathroom to get ready for bed.  He had his little toothbrush standing in a glass so proudly.  I grabbed the other new one out of the bag to discover that I was left with the clear, colorless toothbrush and he had chosen the blue one or did he?

I found this quite interesting since I had not verbally indicated any specific color choice for him and realized that to him the blue one was intended for him and the clear, colorless, unisex implied lack of color one was for me.

I came out laughing and remarking that he was color programmed.  He did not have the slightest clue what I was referring to.  I explained that I had hurriedly grabbed those toothbrushes at the store without even acknowledging the toothbrush colors myself (so I thought).

He look bewildered and then I turned the tables again and told him that he could respond to my observation with his own observation that I unconsciously made a delineating purchase grabbing two different colors and one of them being blue.

My husband’s simple response “So what your saying is that you bought the blue toothbrush for me” and I said yes, but it was not intentionally conscious that I made color choices based on gender until just now!!

Why does this little color observation even matter?

We make choices every day and some are authentically from our hearts.   Other choices are made because we think we are expected to as my husband thought the blue toothbrush was for him.  Blue is an unconscious male specific color so we have been programmed to think.

Growing up with an older sister and a little brother we all had our preferred Charms lollipops “color/flavor choices”.  Orange was my older sister’s; purple was mine and red was my little brother’s.  Our grandparents, aunts and uncles made purchases for us based on those colors as I reflect on the colors of our holiday outfits and accessories.

Did we really like those colors or did we make a snap color choice that ended up defining other choices for us going forward from our lollipops to our clothing and even my purple maid of honor gown for my sister’s wedding that she chose for me.

What I learned from that blue toothbrush is that we run through the days and years making choices that can potentially influence other’s choices besides ones we either make for ourselves or are made for us.

I want to be very intentional about my choices going forward making sure my choices have not been preset or subliminally suggested but are truly authentically my own.

My most favorite feature is the Kid’s Corner which is a special area on the Nokia Lumia 928 that can be set up specific to your kids, nieces and nephews. They won’t be able to access the rest of your phone. Customize the color, photo and add apps, games, music or videos that you want them to see.

Nokia Lumia 928 Kid's Corner

Battery life is a huge issue for me.  I travel with multiple smartphone battery chargers and this becomes cumbersome most times.  I have been waiting for a smartphone to come along with a long battery life.

I find that the Nokia Lumia 928 has an excellent battery life which is essential to me using social media apps and am on the road constantly.

I have not tried it yet but some users have said that they can play their music for several days without having to charge the battery.

I think this particular phone is perfect for a growing family because of the Kid’s corner, security features and the rooms for specific family and friends.

I use Google+ for sharing presentations and documents live regularly so I do not think I will be making the switch anytime soon to the Nokia Lumia 928 as my main business phone.

I am still in the “getting to know you phase” with my Nokia Lumia 928 and will continue to go through the menu of features and apply them to my daily life.

A Brunch Date at the Vinoy St. Petersburg Florida with Family and my My Blackberry Z10

Featured

It began with a bet. The rest, as they say, is history. And what a magnificent history it’s been. From the time it opened at the dawn of 1926, to its current incarnation as one of St. Petersburg’s most spectacular waterfront resorts, this timeless treasure still impresses with its lofty pedigree, along with an ability to survive decades of neglect, winds of change and painstaking renewal. For 85 years, the Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club has been – and always will be – a place to relax, play, indulge, and savor the good life.

Now celebrating its 85th anniversary, the Vinoy continues to expand upon its legacy of comfort and elegance. Just as in years past, guests can enjoy luxurious amenities designed to pamper and restore within stunning surroundings and a chance to experience unique moments for a lifetime of memories.

We decided to take my mother in law Laura to Brunch after Church this past Sunday and found our car in front of the Vinoy.  This particular place seemed the perfect setting for all of us since it has such a Jazz upbeat Big Band vibe.  We needed a respite, an oasis after losing the Patriarch of our Family this past Friday, my Father in law Emile DeCosmo  “one of the finest progressive jazz saxophonists, author, publisher and musical improvisation instructor in the world….!!!  ~ Trade Martin”

Walking up the front Steps past the Front Porch and through the statuesque entrance you cannot help but feel flooded with nostalgic images and gentle whispers that graced the foyer of this rich landmark.

Happily greeted with a Chihuly glass display, the visual feast unfolds as we saunter through the lobby towards the big feast of a Sunday Brunch.

We visited all the Buffet tables and some more than once. We enjoyed  sipping our hot coffee/tea serenaded by a wonderful pianist tickling the ivories of a baby grand piano.

The sights, sounds, aromas and tastes came as great comforts to all of us.

I enjoyed shooting these images with my Verizon Blackberry Z10 as it is so easy to use and not imposing at all in a social public setting such as this. #VZWBuzz  #VZBlackberryZ10

Joyia Love

Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart.                                                                                                                    ~  Psalm 119:111

Joyia Love by Katie Shea Design

Joyia Evangeline Paul  12.05.84 – 08.23.14

Saturday, 08.23.14 close friends and family were invited by Joyia to celebrate her ceremonial Baptism.  Joyia had already been baptized but wanted to have her friends and family visually witness her statement of faith by participating with her in a Baptismal ceremony.

Her Baptism was scheduled for 1:00pm.  We had received word early Saturday morning that the ceremony was cancelled due to Joyia’s failing condition.  We were then invited to come visit Joyia bringing our love, memories, favorite songs and passages to share.

12:00 pm Joyia closed her eyes for the last time an hour before her guests were scheduled to arrive.

Joyia’s parents shared that Joyia had a smile on her face after she took her last breath.

Friends and family arrived as scheduled in steady streams with hugs, words of comfort and platters of food.

Although some would say that 29 years old was a short life, it was a life that brought an abundance of joy to hundreds of people.

The evidence reflected in the throngs of crowds that gathered at the funeral home to pay their respects.  The lines were long and the tears were shed by the bucket.

The Memorial Service at Trinity Fellowship Church unearthed even more how Joyia’s life influenced and left so many impressions of joy and strong faith.

The eulogy was given by Joyia’s cousin and brother who presented so many sides of Joyia.  Joy, strength, hope, kindness, gratitude, love and faith she bestowed on so many.

The Pastors opened up the microphone for any who wanted to share a memory.

The microphone was passed like a baton. Speaker after speaker conveying so many memories but the same message:

Joyia was:

her own person

a fashionista

strong in her convictions

loyal friend to so many

encourager

loved her family

trusted God

loved ham ( YES I said Ham)

Joyia’s brother James and her parent’s message to all is that although Joyia is not present in the body with us here on earth; her Joy lives on in each one of us that she touched with her love and faith.

We can keep Joyia’s testimony alive by sharing  joy, love, hope, gratitude and faith with all that our lives touch in thought, word and deed.

There is no question that Joyia’s 29 years here on earth made indelible marks on so many lives which in turn will live on eternally for generations to come.

Joyia’s mother shared a journal on Caring Bridge to keep all family and friends updated of her journey battling liver disease.

“In 2006 it became necessary for our daughter Joyia to have a liver transplant. The fact that she received one was itself a miracle as God alone orchestrated the details…and He continues to sovereignly and providentially reveal Himself to us in the myriad details of our lives today!”  ~  Stephanie Paul   @ Joyia Evangeline Story  / CaringBridge.org

Author’s Note: Joyia’s mother Stephanie Paul has been my friend for over 35 years.  Our family has been deeply touched and affected by Stephanie, Sesky, Joyia and James as well as the Paul’s extended family and friends. We are grateful to have had the blessing of knowing Joyia and the impact she has left on the world.

Please join us sharing messages of joy, love, hope, gratitude and faith.
